Krishna Tells of Durvasa's Wrath and Blessing
Yudhishthira asks Krishna for the fruit of honouring brahmanas. Krishna tells what he once answered his son Pradyumna: how the fierce sage Durvasa lodged in his house, burned its furnishings, smeared Krishna and Rukmini with pāyasa and drove Rukmini like a horse in his chariot, and how, when Krishna bore it all without anger, Durvasa blessed him, restored everything, and promised Rukmini lasting glory.

Tell us, Madhusudana, the reward of honouring brahmanas. You are the one who knows this matter, and the Grandfather knows you.

śṛṇuṣvāvahito rājandvijānāṃ bharatarṣabha | yathātattvena vadato guṇānvai kurusattama
Listen with attention, O king, O best of the Bharatas, to the virtues of the brahmanas, as I tell them truly, O best of the Kurus.

What reward is there in honouring brahmanas, Madhusudana? Whence comes their lordship, both here and in the world beyond?
Note on the text: Speaker: Pradyumna's own unheaded question fills the whole verse (introduced by verse 3); the input had वासुदेव. Line 1 = CE 13.144.3c; line 2 (ईश्वरत्वं कुतस्तेषामिहैव च परत्र च) is a variant of CE 3e (īśvarasya satas tasya iha caiva paratra ca), kept.

vyuṣṭiṃ brāhmaṇapūjāyāṃ raukmiṇeya nibodha me | ete hi somarājāna īśvarāḥ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ
Learn from me, son of Rukmini, the fruit of honouring brahmanas. For these have Soma as their king, and they are lords over happiness and sorrow.

Thus addressed, I saw my body endowed with splendour.
Note on the text: A single line, as printed (13-264-45a) and as in CE 13.144.39e.
Verse 46 (13.264.46)
rukmiṇīṃ cābravītprītaḥ sarvastrīṇāṃ varaṃ yaśaḥ | kīrtiṃ cānuttamāṃ loke samavāpsyasi śobhane
Pleased, he said to Rukmini: "Your fame will be the foremost among all women, and you will win unsurpassed renown in the world, fair lady."
Durvasa said
Verse 47 (13.264.47)
na tvāṃ jarā vā rogo vā vaivarṇyaṃ cāpi bhāmini | sprakṣyanti puṇyagandhā ca kṛṣṇamārādhayiṣyasi
"Neither old age nor disease nor pallor will touch you, lady; you will be fragrant with a holy scent, and you will be devoted to Krishna."
Verse 48 (13.264.48)
ṣoḍaśānāṃ sahasrāṇāṃ vadhūnāṃ keśavasya ha | variṣṭhā ca salokyā ca keśavasya bhaviṣyasi
"Among the sixteen thousand wives of Keshava, you will be the foremost, and you will share his world."
Note on the text: Corrected बधूनां → वधूनां (misprint in Wikisource; CE reads vadhūnāṃ). Speaker: Durvasa's speech to Rukmini (the heading is carried over from verse 46); the input had वासुदेव.

Verse 49 (13.264.49)
tava mātaramityuktvā tato māṃ punarabravīt | prasthitaḥ sumahātejā durvāsā'gniriva jvalan
Having said this of your mother, the radiant Durvasa, blazing like fire, was about to depart, and spoke to me again:
Verse 50 (13.264.50)
"May this very devotion toward brahmanas stay with you, Keshava." Having said this, my son, he vanished on the spot.
Note on the text: Line 1 is Durvasa's speech, line 2 narration; mixed verse, given to the narrator.
Verse 51 (13.264.51)
tasminnantarhite cāhamupāṃśu vratamācaram | yatkiñcidbrāhmaṇo brūyātsarvaṃ kuryāmiti prabho
When he had vanished, I quietly took a vow: "Whatever a brahmana may say, I shall do it all," O lord.
Verse 52 (13.264.52)
etadvratamahaṃ kṛtvā mātrā te saha putraka | tataḥ paramahṛṣṭātmā prāviśaṃ gṛhameva ca
Having taken this vow, my son, together with your mother, I entered my house with a delighted heart.
Verse 53 (13.264.53)
praviṣṭamātraśca gṛhe sarvaṃ paśyāmi tannavam | yadbhinnaṃ yacca vai dagdhaṃ tena vipreṇa putraka
The moment I entered the house, I saw everything new again, whatever that brahmana had broken or burnt, my son.
Verse 54 (13.264.54)
tato'haṃ vismayaṃ prāptaḥ sarvaṃ dṛṣṭvā navaṃ dṛḍham | apūjayaṃ ca manasā raukmiṇeya sadā dvijān
Then, amazed to see everything made new and firm, I honoured the twice-born in my mind ever after, son of Rukmini.
Verse 55 (13.264.55)
ityahaṃ raukmiṇeyasya pṛcchato bharatarṣabha | māhātmyaṃ dvijamukhyasya sarvamākhyātavāṃstadā
In this way, O best of the Bharatas, when the son of Rukmini asked, I told him the whole greatness of that foremost of brahmanas.
Verse 56 (13.264.56)
tathā tvamapi kaunteya brāhmaṇānsatataṃ prabho | pūjayasva mahābhāgānvāgbhirdānaiśca nityadā
So you too, son of Kunti, mighty one, should always honour the highly blessed brahmanas, every day, with kind words and with gifts.
Verse 57 (13.264.57)
evaṃ vyuṣṭimahaṃ prāpto brāhmaṇasya prasādajām | yacca māmāha bhīṣmo'yaṃ tatsatyaṃ bharatarṣabha
Thus I obtained the fruit that is born of a brahmana's grace. And what Bhishma here has told me is true, O best of the Bharatas.
