Bhishma Sends Yudhishthira to Krishna

Yudhishthira asks what fruit lies in honouring brahmanas. Bhishma, feeling his strength and senses failing, says that Krishna will explain it, and praises Krishna at length as the creator and upholder of the universe, the Boar, the sun, the year and its divisions, the elements, and the four-fold form of Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha.

Verse 1 (13.263.1)

brāhmaṇānarcase rājansatataṃ saṃśitavratān | kaṃ tu dharmodayaṃ dṛṣṭvā tānarcasi janādhipa

O king, you constantly honour the brahmanas of strict vows. What rise of dharma do you see in them, O lord of men, that you worship them?

Verse 2 (13.263.2)

kāṃ vā brāhmaṇapūjāyāṃ vyuṣṭiṃ dṛṣṭvā mahāvrata | tānarcasi mahābāho sarvametadvadasva me

Or what reward of honouring brahmanas have you seen, O mighty-armed one of great vows, that you worship them? Tell me all of this.

Verse 3 (13.263.3)

eṣa te keśavaḥ sarvamākhyāsyati mahāmatiḥ | vyuṣṭiṃ brāhmaṇapūjāyāṃ dṛṣṭvā vyuṣṭiṃ mahāvrata

Here is Keshava, of great understanding; he will tell you everything. He has seen for himself the fruit of honouring brahmanas, O you of great vows, and he will explain that fruit to you.

Verse 4 (13.263.4)

balaṃ śrotre vāṅmanaścakṣuṣī ca | jñānaṃ tathā na viśuddhaṃ mamādya | dehanyāso nāticirānmato me | na cātitūrṇaṃ savitā'dya yāti

My strength, my hearing, my speech, my mind and my eyes, and my knowledge too, are no longer clear today. I think the laying down of my body is not far off, and the sun does not move very swiftly today.

Note on the text: Corrected the run-together नविशुद्धं → न विशुद्धं (word-division misprint in Wikisource; CE reads na viśuddhaṃ). Wikisource prints the four lines as separate quarters; CE 13.143.4a and 4c carry two quarters each.

Verse 5 (13.263.5)

uktā dharmā ye purāṇe mahānto | rājanviprāṇāṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ viśāṃ ca | yeye śūdrāṇāṃ dharmamupāsate te | tāneva kṛṣṇādupaśikṣasva pārthaḥ

The great duties declared in the ancient lore for brahmanas, kshatriyas and vaishyas, O king, and those that are observed by people who follow the dharma of the shudras: learn these very things from Krishna, O Partha.

Note on the text: Corrected कृष्णदुपशिक्षस्व → कृष्णादुपशिक्षस्व (misprint in Wikisource; dropped ā, CE reads kṛṣṇād upaśikṣasva). Lines 1-2 correspond to CE 13.143.5a; lines 3-4 read differently from CE 5c (recension variant, kept).

Verse 6 (13.263.6)

ahaṃ hyenaṃ vedmi tattvena kṛṣṇaṃ | yo'yaṃ hi yaccāsya balaṃ purāṇam | ameyātmā keśavaḥ kauravendra | soyaṃ dharmaṃ vakṣyati sarvametat

I know this Krishna in truth: who he is, and what his ancient power is. Keshava is of immeasurable self, O chief of the Kurus; he will tell you all of this dharma.

Verse 7 (13.263.7)

Krishna created the earth and his own heaven; from Krishna's body the earth came into being. He is this ancient Boar of fearful strength; he fashioned the mountains and the quarters of space.

Note on the text: Corrected कृष्णस्यि → कृष्णस्य (misprint in Wikisource; stray vowel sign, CE reads kṛṣṇasya). Line mapping: 1 = CE 13.143.7a; 2 = star 13,143.007a*0655_01; 3 = CE 7b; 4 = star 13,143.007b*0657_01 (stars not in the CE's numbered text).

Verse 8 (13.263.8)

asmādvāyuścāntarikṣaṃ divaṃ ca | diśaścatasro vidiśaścatasraḥ | sṛṣṭistathaiveyamanuprasūtā | sa nirmame viśvamidaṃ purāṇaḥ

From him came the wind, the atmosphere and heaven, the four directions and the four intermediate directions. In the same way this creation too sprang from him; the ancient one fashioned this whole universe.

Note on the text: Lines = CE 13.143.7c, 7d, 7e, 7f (Wikisource divides the CE verse into two verses; CE 7c reads differently, recension variant).

asya nābhyāṃ puṣkaraṃ samprasūtaṃ | yatrotpannaḥ svayamevāmitaujāḥ | yenācchinnaṃ tattamaḥ pārtha ghoraṃ | yatra tiṣṭhantyarṇavāstacchayānāḥ

From his navel sprang the lotus, in which the boundlessly mighty one was himself born. By him was cleft that dreadful darkness, O Partha, in which the oceans lie asleep.

Verse 10 (13.263.10)

kṛte yuge dharma āsītsamagra- | stretākāle yajñamanuprapannaḥ | balaṃ tvāsīddvāpare pārtha kṛṣṇaḥ | kalau tvadharmaḥ kṣitimevājagāma

In the Krita age dharma was whole; in the Treta age it turned to sacrifice. In the Dvapara, O Partha, there was strength, and Krishna himself; but in the Kali, adharma came upon the earth.

Verse 11 (13.263.11)

sa eva pūrvaṃ nijaghāna daityā- | nsa eva devaśca babhūva samrāṭ | sa bhūtānāṃ bhāvano bhūtabhavyaḥ | sa viśvasyāsya jagataścābhigoptāḥ

In the beginning it was he who slew the Daityas, and he became the sovereign god. He is the source of beings, who is all that has been and all that will be, and the guardian of this entire world.

Verse 12 (13.263.12)

When dharma wilts in the line of the gods, Krishna is born among men. Established in dharma, that one of purified soul protects the higher worlds and the lower.

Verse 13 (13.263.13)

tyājyāṃstyaktvā cāsurāṇāṃ vadhena | kāryākārye kāraṇaṃ caiva pāti | kṛtaṃ kariṣyatkriyate ca devo | rāhuṃ somaṃ viddhi ca śakramenam

Setting aside what must be abandoned, by the slaying of the asuras, he protects the ground of what is to be done and not done. The god has done, will do, and does; know him to be Rahu, Soma and this Shakra.

Verse 14 (13.263.14)

sa viśvakarmā sa hi viśvarūpaḥ | sa viśvabugviśvasṛgviśvajicca | sa śūlabhṛcchoṇitabhṛtkarāla- | staṃ karmabhirviditaṃ vai stuvanti

He is Vishvakarman and he is of every form; he is the all-knowing, the maker of all, the conqueror of all. He bears the lance, he bears blood, he is terrible; thus people praise him, known by his deeds.

Note on the text: Between the second and fourth lines of the CE verse (13.143.13a, 13c) the CE prints star lines 13,143.013b*0658_01-03, which Wikisource lacks; not added.

Verse 15 (13.263.15)

taṃ gandharvāṇāmapsarasāṃ ca nitya- | mupatiṣṭhante vibudhānāṃ śatāni | taṃ rākṣasāśca parisaṃvadanti | rājanyānāṃ sa vijigīṣurekaḥ

Gandharvas and apsarases always wait upon him, and hundreds of the gods; the rakshasas too gather about him in converse. Among kings he alone is the one who desires conquest.

Verse 16 (13.263.16)

At the sacrifice the shamsitri priests praise him; at the Rathantara the Sama singers praise him; brahmanas praise him with Vedic mantras, and the adhvaryu priests prepare the oblation for him.

Verse 17 (13.263.17)

Having entered the ancient cave of Brahman, he saw the submersion of the earth, O Bharata, at the beginning. And he of supreme deeds raised the earth up again, after throwing the Daityas, serpents and Danavas into turmoil.

Verse 18 (13.263.18)

taṃ ghoṣārthe gīrbhirindrāḥ stuvanti | sa cāpīśo bhārataikaḥ paśūnām | tasya bhakṣānvividhānvedayanti | tamevājau vāhanaṃ vedayanti

For the sake of the cowherd settlement the Indras praise him with hymns, and he alone, O Bharata, is lord of living creatures. They tell of the many portions of food offered to him, and they proclaim him the vehicle of victory in battle.

Note on the text: Wikisource prints lines 1-2 twice (lines 3-4 are a repeat of lines 1-2, labelled 13-263-33c,d); lines 3-4 are restored from the critical edition: CE 13.143.31c (nakṣatrayogā ṛtavaś ca pārtha / viṣvaksenāt sarvam etat prasūtam). jyotirbhūtaḥ paramosau purastā- | tprakāśate yatprabhayā viśvarūpaḥ | apaḥ sṛṣṭvā sarvabhūtātmayoniḥ | purā'karotsarvamevātha viśvam

He, the supreme, made of light, who shines in the beginning, by whose radiance the all-formed one shines; having created the waters, the source of all beings' selves, he made this entire universe in the beginning.

Verse 38 (13.263.38)

ṛtūnutpātānvividhānyadbhutāni | meghānvidyutsarvamairāvataṃ ca | sarvaṃ kṛṣṇātsthāvaraṃ jaṅgamaṃ ca | viśvātmānaṃ viṣṇumenaṃ pratīhi

The seasons, the portents, the many marvels, the clouds, the lightning and Airavata too, everything moving and unmoving is from Krishna. Know him as Vishnu, the Self of the universe.

Note on the text: Corrected जङ्गं → जङ्गमं (misprint in Wikisource; dropped म, CE reads jaṅgamaṃ). Lines 1 and 3 = CE 13.143.36a and 36c; the CE's star lines 13,143.036b*0663_01-02 are not in Wikisource.

Verse 39 (13.263.39)

viśvāvāsaṃ nirguṇaṃ vāsudevaṃ | saṅkarṣaṇaṃ jīvabhūtaṃ vadanti | tataḥ pradyumnamaniruddhaṃ caturtha- | mājñāpayatyātmayonirmahātmā

They speak of the dwelling-place of all, free of attributes, as Vasudeva, and of Sankarshana as the living being; then the great self-born one commands Pradyumna, and Aniruddha as the fourth.

Verse 40 (13.263.40)

sa pañcadhā pañcaguṇopapannaṃ | sañcodayanviśvamidaṃ sisṛkṣuḥ | tataścakārāvanimārutau ca | khaṃ jyotirambhaśca tathaiva pārtha

Wishing to create this universe, he set it in motion in five ways, endowed with five qualities. Then he made the earth and the wind, the sky, the fire and the water, O Partha.

Note on the text: Corrected अम्भश्चि → अम्भश्च (misprint in Wikisource; stray vowel sign, CE reads āpaś ca). Line 1 reads पञ्चगुणोपपन्नं where the CE has pañcajanopapannaṃ (the page's note records पञ्चजनोपपन्नम् as a variant); Wikisource's reading kept.

Verse 41 (13.263.41)

Having made this fourfold world of the moving and unmoving, he then laid out the earth with its five seeds: heaven and earth, fire, then water and the winds.

Note on the text: Lines 1-3 = CE 13.143.39a, 39c; line 4 (द्यावापृथिव्यग्निरथाम्बुवायू) differs from the CE's line (dyauḥ pṛthivyāṃ dhāsyati bhūri vāri), a recension variant, kept. The CE's star lines 13,143.039b*0664_01-02 and its lines 39e-f are not in Wikisource.

Verse 42 (13.263.42)

tato devānasurānmānuṣāṃśca | lokānṛṣīṃścātha pitṝnprajāśca | samāsena vividhānprāṇilokā- | nsarvānsadā bhūtapatiḥ sisṛkṣuḥ

Then the lord of beings, ever wishing to create, made the gods, the asuras and men, the worlds, the sages, the ancestors and the creatures: in short, all the varied worlds of living beings.

Note on the text: Wikisource prints only a cut-off last line of this verse (labelled 13-263-42f, beginning with a stray न्); the three lost lines are restored from the critical edition: CE 13.143.40a, 40c (tato devān asurān mānuṣāṃś ca / lokān ṛṣīṃś cātha pitṝn prajāś ca / samāsena vividhān prāṇilokān), with line 4 = Wikisource's own line = CE 40d (sarvān sadā bhūtapatiḥ sisṛkṣuḥ).

Verse 43 (13.263.43)

śubhāśubhaṃ sthāvaraṃ jaṅgamaṃ ca | viṣvaksenātsarvametatpratīhi | yadvartate yacca bhaviṣyatīha | sarvaṃ hyetatkeśavaṃ tvaṃ pratīhi

The good and the bad, the unmoving and the moving: know all this to be from Vishvaksena. What exists now and what will be hereafter: know all of it to be Keshava.

Verse 44 (13.263.44)

mṛtyuścaiva prāṇināmantakāle | sākṣātkṛṣṇaḥ keśavo dehabhājām | bhūtaṃ ca yacceha na vidma kiñci- | dviṣvaksenātsarvametatpratīhi

He is death for living beings at the end, Krishna Keshava himself for the embodied; and whatever exists that we do not know at all: know all of it to be from Vishvaksena.

Note on the text: Line 2 (साक्षात्कृष्णः केशवो देहभाजाम्) differs from the CE's line (sākṣāt kṛṣṇaḥ śāśvato dharmavāhaḥ); recension variant, kept.

Verse 45 (13.263.45)

yatpraśastaṃ ca lokeṣu puṇyaṃ yacca śubhāśubham | tatsarvaṃ keśavo'cintyo viparītamataḥ param

Whatever is praised in the worlds, whatever is meritorious, whatever is good or bad, all of that is Keshava, beyond thought; whatever is supposed to lie beyond him is the reverse of this.

Note on the text: Line 2 reads विपरीतमतः परम् where the CE has viparītam ato bhavet (recension variant, kept); the page's note glosses it: whatever is imagined beyond Keshava is the reverse, the wrong path.

Verse 46 (13.263.46)

etādṛśaḥ keśavo'taśca bhūyo | nārāyaṇaḥ paramaścāvyayaśca | madhyādyantasya jagatastasthuṣaśca | bubhūṣatāṃ prabhavaścāvyayaśca

Such is Keshava; and beyond that he is Narayana, supreme and imperishable. He is the beginning, middle and end of the world and of all that stands still, and the origin and the dissolution of those who seek to come into being.

Note on the text: Corrected तस्तुषश्च → तस्थुषश्च (misprint in Wikisource; CE reads tasthuṣaḥ). Lines 1 and 4 read differently from the CE (svayaṃbhūḥ; sarveṣāṃ bhūtānāṃ prabhavaś cāpyayaś ca), recension variants, kept; the CE's star lines 13,143.044d*0665_01-03 are not in Wikisource.
