The Boons Krishna Received from Shiva and Uma
Krishna finishes his account to Yudhishthira of his worship of Shiva. He asked the God for firmness in dharma, victory over his enemies, fame, strength, a love of yoga, nearness to Shiva and a great many sons, and Shiva granted them. Uma then offered eight further boons, and Krishna asked for freedom from anger toward Brahmins, the favour of his parents, a hundred sons, enjoyment, family affection, peace and skill. She granted all of this, adding sixteen thousand wives, lasting affection and seven thousand guests fed daily, and the divine pair vanished. Krishna says he told all this to Upamanyu, who declared that no god, refuge or giver equals Shiva.

Then the mother of the world, the sustaining one who purifies all, Uma, Sharvani, a treasure of austerities, composed and attentive, said to me: "The Blessed Lord has given you a son, blameless one, named Samba.

Ask of me too eight boons that you desire; I will give them to you." O son of Pandu, I bowed my head to her and said:
Note on the text: Corrected गृहण → गृहाण (misprint in Wikisource; the imperative 'take' needs the long ā; the critical edition reads gṛhāṇa). Lines = critical edition 13,016.005c,e. Wikisource reads 'मत्तोप्य' for 'मत्तोऽप्य' (avagraha omitted in print; left as is).

So it shall be, you of godlike power; I never speak falsely, at any time. You shall have sixteen thousand wives, and your hold on their love shall never fail.

This wonder, O best of kings, I once related in full to the Brahmin Upamanyu, who was full of radiance. Bowing to the God of gods, he said, O man of good vows:

nāsti śarvasamo devo nāsti śarvasamā gatiḥ | nāsti śarvasamo dāne nāsti śarvasamo raṇe
There is no god equal to Sharva, no refuge equal to Sharva; none equals Sharva in giving, none equals Sharva in battle.
Note on the text: Critical edition 13,016.011c,e: the page puts the first of these two lines last (critical edition order: दाने, रणे, देवः, गतिः).
