Tandi's Hymn to Mahadeva

Upamanyu tells Krishna how the sage Tandi, after ten thousand years of worship in the Krita age, saw Mahadeva and praised him. In his hymn Tandi calls Shiva the supreme Brahman, Time, the Person, the door of the sun and moon paths, the source of the Vedas and sacrifice, and the goal of every kind of seeker: the sacrificers, the ascetics, the renouncers, the seekers of dissolution and the knowers. Pleased, Shiva promises Tandi an imperishable, radiant life and a son who will compose aphorisms, and grants him firm devotion. Upamanyu then prepares to recite the secret names of Shiva that Tandi gave him.

Note on the text: Corrected असङ्ख्ये → असङ्ख्येयं and योनि → योनिं (misprints in Wikisource; dropped letters; the critical edition reads asaṃkhyeyam and yoniṃ). Note on the text: Corrected प्रार्तयन्तीह → प्रार्थयन्तीह (misprint in Wikisource; 'prārtayanti' is not a word, the evident form is 'prārthayanti', 'they seek'; the critical edition has a different verb here, prāpnuvantīha).

Note on the text: Wikisource's first line ('सेयमासादिता साक्षात्त्वद्भक्तिर्जन्मभिर्मया') is a vulgate variant of critical edition 13,016.028a ('so \'yam āsāditaḥ sākṣād bahubhir janmabhir mayā').

He is the giver of good and evil destinies to all beings. He ordains birth and death among all creatures. And whatever the goal of those who seek perfection, that is this Lord.

Note on the text: Corrected सोयमीस्वरः → सोऽयमीश्वरः (misprint in Wikisource; स for श and the avagraha dropped; compare verse 32). Three-line verse as printed on the page: lines 1-2 = critical edition 13,016.033a,c; the third line is a vulgate line that replaces the critical edition's 13,016.034a-c ('ayaṃ ca siddhikāmānām ṛṣīṇāṃ siddhidaḥ prabhuḥ / ayaṃ ca mokṣakāmānāṃ dvijānāṃ mokṣadaḥ prabhuḥ'), which Wikisource does not have. The page prints the verse-end as a single danda; normalised.

Gods, asuras and men do not truly know you, Bhava, for they are deluded by that very one who dwells unrevealed in the heart.

Note on the text: Critical edition 13,016.039a,c. Wikisource's second line ('मोहिताः खल्वनेनैव हृदिस्थेनाप्रकाशिना') differs from the critical edition's 'mohitāḥ khalv anenaiva hṛcchayena praveśitāḥ' (recension variant). The page prints no verse-end mark; added.

Gaining him, the wise man thinks no gain greater; reaching that subtle, supreme attainment, he goes to the imperishable, the undecaying.

Note on the text: Critical edition 13,016.042a,c; the second line is a vulgate variant ('यां सूक्ष्मां परमां प्राप्तिं गच्छन्नव्ययमक्षयम्' for 'prāṇasūkṣmāṃ parāṃ prāptim āgacchaty akṣayāvahām').

Verse 42 (13.47.42)

Thus Tandi, a mass of austerity, praised Ishana with his whole self, and sang that supreme Brahman which the maker of the worlds sang of old.

Note on the text: Corrected तुष्टावेसानमात्मना → तुष्टावेशानमात्मना (misprint in Wikisource; स for श; the critical edition reads tuṣṭāveśānam). Speaker: the page prints this verse under Tandi's heading (तण्डिरुवाच), but it is Upamanyu's narration of the hymn's close ('Thus Tandi praised ...'), and Tandi's own speech ends at verse 65; given to Upamanyu. Critical edition 13,016.066a,c.

Verse 67 (13.47.67)

एवं स्तुतो महादेवस्तण्डिना ब्रह्मवादिना । उवाच भगवान्देव उमया सहितः प्रभुः ॥

Then, pleased at the words "Brahma, Indra, Vishnu, the Vishvedevas and the great sages do not know you," Shiva said to him:

शिव उवाच · Shiva (Mahadeva) said

"You shall be imperishable and unfailing, free from sorrow, renowned, full of radiance and endowed with divine knowledge.

Note on the text: Shiva's speech to Tandi (no heading printed; it fills the whole verse, so given to Shiva, as the critical edition does not head it separately either). Critical edition 13,016.068a,c.

Verse 70 (13.47.70)

ऋषीणामभिगम्यश्च सूत्रकर्ता सुतस्तव । मत्प्रसादाद्द्विजश्रेष्ठ भविष्यति न संशयः ॥

What wish shall I grant you today? Tell me what you desire, dear child." With folded hands he said: "May my devotion to you be firm."

Note on the text: First line is Shiva's speech, second line the narrator's report of Tandi's reply (and his words); the verse is mixed, so kept with the narrator Upamanyu. Critical edition 13,016.070a,c. Wikisource reads 'भक्तिर्दृढाऽस्तु' ('दृढाऽस्तु'); kept.

Having granted these boons, the God, honoured by the gods and sages and praised by the immortals, vanished on the spot.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads 'एतान्दत्त्वा वरान्' where the critical edition has 'evaṃ dattvā varaṃ' (recension variant). The page repeats the heading उपमन्युरुवाच before this verse (no change of speaker).

yāni ca prathitānyādau taṇḍirākhyātavānmama | nāmāni mānavaśreṣṭha tāni tvaṃ śṛṇu siddhaye

And the names that Tandi told me at the outset, famed ones, O best of men: hear them, for your success.

Note on the text: Corrected मानानि → नामानि (misprint in Wikisource; the letters ना and मा are transposed; the critical edition reads nāmāni). The page prints no half-verse mark after मम; added.

दश नामसहस्राणि देवेष्वाह पितामहः । सर्वस्य शास्त्रेषु तथा दश नामशतानि च ॥
