Upamanyu Recites the Thousand and Eight Names of Shiva

Krishna tells Yudhishthira how the sage Upamanyu, after composing himself, began to recite the names of Shiva that Brahma had spoken and the sage Tandi had brought to earth. Upamanyu praises the hymn as the king of hymns, says to whom it may and may not be given, and then recites the one thousand and eight names of Sharva (Sthanu, Bhava, Hara, Rudra and the rest). He ends with the fruit of devotion to Shiva, the line through which the hymn was handed down (Brahma, Shakra, Death, the Rudras, Tandi, and on through Yama, Nachiketa and Markandeya to Upamanyu), and the protection and merit gained by reciting it for a year.

evametatpaṭhante ya ekabhaktyā tu śaṅkaram | yā gatiḥ sāṅkhyayogānāṃ vrajantyetāṃ gatiṃ tadā

Those who thus recite this with single-minded devotion to Shankara go to the same goal that belongs to the followers of Sankhya and Yoga.

Verse 175 (13.48.175)

etadrahasyaṃ paramaṃ brahmaṇo hṛdi saṃsthitam | brahmā provāca śakrāya śakraḥ provāca mṛtyave

mṛtyuḥ provāca rudrebhyo rudrebhyastaṇḍimāgamat | mahatā tapasā prāptastaṇḍinā brahmasadmāni

nārāyaṇāya sādhyāya samādhiṣṭhāya dhīmate | yamāya prāha bhagavānsādhyo nārāyaṇo'cyutaḥ

It was then given to Narayana the Sadhya, wise and steadfast in meditation; and the Blessed Narayana the Sadhya, the Unfallen, told it to Yama.

piśācā yātudhānā vā guhyakā bhujagā api | yaḥ paṭheta śuciḥ pārtha brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ | abhagrayogo varṣaṃ tu so'śvamedhaphalaṃ labhet

nor do pishachas, yatudhanas, guhyakas or serpents, for the man who recites it, pure, celibate and master of his senses, O Partha. With unbroken practice for a year he would gain the fruit of the horse sacrifice.
