Great Sages Recount Mahadeva's Boons

Vyasa bids Yudhishthira recite the hymn to Maheshvara, and a series of sages tell what Shiva gave them: Kapila, Charushirsha (Alambayana), Valmiki, Parashurama, Vishvamitra, Asita Devala, Gritsamada, Krishna, Jaigishavya, Garga, Parashara (the birth of Vyasa), Mandavya and Galava. Krishna then reports Upamanyu's teaching that those who turn to Shiva, even in thought, are freed from sin, and recites a hymn naming the gods and powers that are born of Sharva, with the fruit of reciting it.

Long ago, my son, while I was performing supreme austerity on Meru for the sake of a son, I proclaimed this hymn, O great king.
