Narada Tells Markandeya of the Failing of Dharma

Yudhishthira asks how a man is saved by sons, and Bhishma recounts an old conversation between Narada and Markandeya at the confluence of the Bhogavati, where several sages were gathered. Narada describes how dharma, whole in the Krita age, loses a foot in each age until only one remains in the Nandika age, and explains that an offering hallowed by mantras and given rightly is accepted by the gods, while offerings given wrongly go to asuras, rakshasas, pretas and bhutas, and those of the lowest classes are not taken by gods or ancestors at all.

The sages said to Narada, "Speak wherever he has a doubt. O knower of the truth in dharma and adharma, you are indeed the one who cuts through doubts."

Note on the text: Speaker kept with the narrator, Bhishma: line 1 is narration and line 2 the sages' address to Narada, so the verse is not Markandeya's speech although the page's heading (from verse 6) is Markandeya's; the CE's speaker tags for this passage fall mid-verse and do not agree with the page.
