Narada on Abandoning a Wife and on Worthy Brahmins
Markandeya presses Narada with questions of household law: the duty of a man with many wives, the status of sons of courtesans and maidservants, when a wife may be abandoned and when she may not, and the comparison of women to rivers made pure again by their monthly courses. Narada names the five tirthas in a man's hand, the first being the Vaishnava, and speaks of unrestrained women, of Brahmins without the Savitri, and of shrotriyas who have taken to trade. Bhishma closes the account: Markandeya takes leave and the sages turn to the tirthas.

arthāśca nāryaśca samānamena- | cchreyāṃsi puṃsāmiha mohayanti | ratipramodātpramadā haranti | bhogairdhanaṃ cāpyupahanti dharmān
Wealth and women alike confuse the good of men in this world. Women carry it away through the delights of love, and wealth, through enjoyments, destroys the dharmas.

havyaṃ kavyaṃ ca dharmātmā sarvaṃ tacchrotriyo'rhati | dattaṃ hi śrotriye sādhau jvalitāgnāvivāhutiḥ
A righteous shrotriya deserves all oblations and funeral offerings; for what is given to a good shrotriya is like an offering poured into a blazing fire.

Born in the families of shrotriyas, with selves informed of the meaning of the Vedas, why have some abandoned the threefold knowledge and taken up the livelihood of farming and trade?
