Narada on the Fault of Women and Its Atonement

Markandeya asks what fault lies in the fickleness of women. Narada answers that union within one's own class is faultless and ancient, ordained by Dhata with Vishnu's leave, and that Bhaga was granted a boon by Vishnu, so the greater fault lies with men. He lists penances for a transgression, says women are to be guarded and never reviled, killed or tormented, and praises them as givers of delight and prosperity and the foundation of the line of sons.

Verse 1 (13.58.1)

śrutaṃ narāṇāṃ cāpalyaṃ parastrīṣu prajāyatām | pramadānāṃ tu cāpalye doṣamicchāmi veditum

I have heard of the fickleness of men toward other men's wives. Now I wish to learn what fault lies in the fickleness of women.

Verse 2 (13.58.2)

ekavarṇe vidoṣaṃ tu gamanaṃ pūrvakālikam | dhātā ca samanujñāto viṣṇunā tattathā'karot

Union within a single class is without fault, and has been so from ancient times; and Dhata, permitted by Vishnu, ordained it so.

Verse 3 (13.58.3)

bhagaliṅge mahāprājña pūrvameva prajāpatiḥ | sasarja tābhyāṃ saṃyogamanujñātaścakāra saḥ

O greatly wise one, long ago Prajapati created a union between the two, the female and the male organs; and he did so with permission.

Verse 4 (13.58.4)

atha viṣṇuprasādena bhago dattavaraḥ kila | tena caiva prasādena sarvāṃllokānupāśnute

Then, by the grace of Vishnu, Bhaga was granted a boon, it is said, and by that same grace he attains all the worlds.

Verse 5 (13.58.5)

tasmāttu puruṣe doṣo hyadhiko nātra saṃśayaḥ | vinā garbhaṃ savarṇeṣu na tyājyā gamanātstriyaḥ

Therefore the fault lies more with the man, there is no doubt of it. Women are not to be abandoned for union with men of their own class, so long as there is no conception.

Verse 6 (13.58.6)

prāyaścittaṃ yathānyāyaṃ daṇḍaṃ kuryātsa paṇḍitaḥ | śvabhirvā daṃśanaṃ snānaṃ savanatritayaṃ niśi

The wise man should impose penance and punishment as is proper: being bitten by dogs, bathing, and performing the three savanas at night,

Verse 7 (13.58.7)

bhūmau ca bhasmaśayanaṃ dānaṃ bhogavivarjitam | doṣagauravataḥ kālo dravyagauravameva ca | maryādā sthāpitā pūrvamiti tīrthāntaraṃ gate

sleeping on the ground on ashes, giving gifts, and abstaining from enjoyment. The time and the substance of the penance depend on the gravity of the fault. This limit was laid down long ago, when Bhaga went to the other tirtha.

Verse 8 (13.58.8)

tadyoṣitāṃ tu dīrghāyo nāsti doṣo vyatikrame | bhagatīrthāntare śuddho viṣṇostu vacanādiha

So, O long-lived one, there is no fault for women in such a transgression. Bhaga was purified at the other tirtha, by Vishnu's word, here.

Verse 9 (13.58.9)

rakṣyāścaivānyasaṃvādairanyagehādvicakṣaṇaiḥ | āsāṃ śuddhau viśeṣeṇa karmaṇāṃ phalamaśnute

And the discerning should guard them by keeping them from talk with others and from the houses of others. When they are kept pure, a man in particular reaps the fruit of his rites.

Verse 10 (13.58.10)

naitā vācyā na vai vadhyā na kleśyāḥ śubhamicchatā | viṣṇuprasādādityeva bhagastīrthāntaraṃ gataḥ | māsimāsi ṛtustāsāṃ duṣkṛtānyapakarṣati

Those who seek their own good should not reproach these women, nor kill them, nor torment them. It was by Vishnu's grace, so it is said, that Bhaga went to the other tirtha; and month after month their monthly course carries away their misdeeds.

Verse 11 (13.58.11)

striyastoṣakarā nṝṇāṃ striyaḥ puṣṭipradāḥ sadā | putrasetupratiṣṭhāśca striyo loke mahādyute

Women give men delight; women always bring them prosperity; and women in the world, O greatly radiant one, are the foundation of the bridge of sons.
