Narada on Sons Born of Another's Wife
Bhishma relays a conversation in which Markandeya asks Narada how women who live in an ashrama can be free of fault, and what becomes of sons born to other men's wives. Narada gives the ruling on seed sown in another's field and names the two kinds of such sons, the kunda and the golaka, whose offerings to gods and ancestors are taken by yatudhanas, pishachas and other night-roamers, though no gift is wholly lost. He adds that sons of virtuous mothers who follow their calling gratify the ancestors and the gods.

I have heard in full about wives and about sons, O great sage. Now tell me, sir: how is it that women who live in an ashrama are not faulted?

āśramasthāsu nārīṣu bāndhavatvaṃ praṇaśyati | naṣṭavaṃśyā bhavantyetā bandhūnāmatha bhartṛṇām
Among women who live in an ashrama, the bond of kinship is destroyed; they become cut off from the line of their kinsmen and of their husbands.

paradārā muktadoṣāstā nāryo''śramasaṃsthitāḥ | svayamīśāḥ svadehānāṃ kāmyāstadgatamānasāḥ
Though they are other men's wives, those women who live in an ashrama are free of fault; they are mistresses of their own bodies, desirable, their hearts set on him.
