The Eight Ways of Taking a Wife

Markandeya asks Narada about dharma and adharma in taking women as wives. Narada says there are eight lawful ways of taking a wife, of which three leave dharma untouched, and Markandeya asks about the other five. Narada names them: a wife of the same gotra, a bought wife, another man's wife taken by arrangement, a wife who has gone away and returned, and one brought from a hermitage, all of whom are counted as remarried wives and bear sons who may give oblations and offerings.
