Angiras Teaches Gautama the Merit of the Holy Fords

Yudhishthira asks about the holy fords of the earth, and Bhishma relays what the sage Angiras once taught Gautama. Angiras names rivers, lakes, hermitages and mountains, from Kashmir and the Himalaya to Prayaga, Gaya and the Vindhya, and tells what each gives to one who bathes there and fasts: the fruit of sacrifices, heaven, release from sin. He adds that fords too distant to reach may be visited in the mind, and Bhishma ends by praising the hearing and recitation of this teaching.

Note on the text: Printed in the page between a backtick and a closing quote mark (a bracketed passage); the stray marks were removed. Corrected निरिचिं → निर्ऋतिं (misprint in Wikisource; CE 13.26.40a nirṛtiṃ) and ब्रह्मगवा → ब्रह्मगया (misprint; CE 13.26.40a gayāṃ); both are the smallest fix yielding the evident word and are uncertain. A doublet of lines found in the CE: line 1 ~ CE 13.26.40a (muñjapṛṣṭhaṃ gayāṃ caiva nirṛtiṃ devaparvatam), line 2 ~ CE 13.26.41e (devahrada upaspṛśya brahmabhūto virājate), line 3 ~ CE 13.26.46c (ṣaṇmāsaṃ padam āsthāya māsenaikena śudhyati).

He never goes to the abode of Vivasvat's son, Yama; one who dwells at Kanyahrada goes to the world of the gods.

Note on the text: Split from input verse 55, which had merged this verse's first line with the next verse (the page prints the line unnumbered; its verse number 54 and its second line are lost). Line 1 is as printed (CE 13.26.50a); line 2 is restored from the critical edition (13.26.50c: yasya kanyāhrade vāso devalokaṃ sa gacchati).

Verse 55 (13.64.55)

Kalodaka, Nandikunda and Uttaramanasa: having come to them even from a hundred yojanas away, one who has killed an embryo is freed from the sin.

Note on the text: Corrected भूणहा → भ्रूणहा (misprint in Wikisource; CE bhrūṇahā). Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has the pair only as star passage 13.26.56d*0225_01-02 (kālodakaṃ nandikuṇḍaṃ tathaivottaramānasam / abhyetya yojanaśatād bhrūṇahā vipramucyate).

Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has the pair only as star passage 13.26.56d*0225_03-04 (nandīśvarasya mūrtiṃ tu dṛṣṭvā mucyeta kilbiṣaiḥ / svargamārge naraḥ snātvā svargalokaṃ sa gacchati).

Note on the text: Line 1 is CE 13.26.58c (adhruvaṃ jīvitaṃ jñātvā yo vai vedāntago dvijaḥ); line 2 is CE 13.26.59a. The CE continues with 59c (tataḥ siddho divaṃ gacched brahmalokaṃ sanātanam), which Wikisource lacks; not added.

Verse 66 (13.64.66)

ततः क्रोधं च लोभं च यो जित्वा तीर्थमावसेत् । न तेन किञ्चिन्न प्राप्तं तीर्थाभिगमनाद्भवेत् ॥

idaṃ dadyāddvijātīnāṃ sādhorātmahitasya ca | suhṛdāṃ ca japetkarṇe śiṣyasyānugatasya ca

One should give this to the twice-born, to a good man who seeks his own welfare, and murmur it into the ear of friends and of a devoted pupil.

Note on the text: Removed a stray zero-width non-joiner inside द्विजातीनां (no change to the words).

Verse 70 (13.64.70)

दत्तवान्गौतमस्यैतदङ्गिरा वै महातपाः । अङ्गिराः समनुज्ञातः काश्यपेन च धीमता ॥

dattavāngautamasyaitadaṅgirā vai mahātapāḥ | aṅgirāḥ samanujñātaḥ kāśyapena ca dhīmatā

The greatly austere Angiras gave this to Gautama; Angiras had been given leave by the wise Kashyapa.

Note on the text: Speaker: the verse speaks of Angiras in the third person, so it is Bhishma's narration (no heading is printed after Angiras's); the input carried Angiras over. CE 13.26.64 reads gurubhiḥ samanujñātaḥ in line 2.

Verse 71 (13.64.71)

महर्षीणामिदं जप्यं पावनानां तथोत्तमम् । जपंश्चाभ्युत्थितः शश्वन्निर्मलः स्वर्गमाप्नुयात् ॥

Note on the text: Speaker: Bhishma's closing words (third-person reference to Angiras in the next verse); the input carried Angiras over.

Verse 72 (13.64.72)

इदं यश्चापि शृणुयाद्रहस्यं त्वङ्गिरोमतम् । उत्तमे च कुले जन्म लभेज्जातीश्च संस्मरेत् ॥

Note on the text: Speaker: Bhishma's closing words (Angiras is spoken of in the third person); the input carried Angiras over. Corrected लभेञ्जातीश्च → लभेज्जातीश्च (misprint in Wikisource; the sandhi of लभेत् + जाती is ज्ज; CE labhej jātiṃ ca).
