The Siddha's Praise of the Ganga

Great sages visit Bhishma on his bed of arrows, talk with him, and vanish; Yudhishthira then asks which lands, hermitages, mountains and rivers are the most holy. Bhishma answers with an old conversation between the gleaner Shilavritti and a Siddha, in which the Siddha praises the Ganga at length: she cleanses sin, lifts the dead to heaven and is the surest refuge for every being. Bhishma urges Yudhishthira to resort to her, and the Pandavas are delighted.

prātastrimārgeṣu kṛtāvagāhā | vipāpmanāṃ vitatā viśvagoptā | nārāyaṇādakṣayātpūrvajātā | viṣṇoḥ padācchiṃśumārāddhruvācca | somātsūryānmerurūpācca viṣṇoḥ | samāgatā śivamūrdhno himādrim

Bathed in at dawn in her three courses, spread wide for those freed from sin, the protector of all; born of old from the imperishable Narayana; from the foot of Vishnu, from the Shishumara and from Dhruva, from the Moon, from the Sun, and from Vishnu's form as Meru, she came from Shiva's head and reached the snowy mountain.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition: Wikisource prints only a last line labelled 13-65-94f, "दिवो भुवश्चापि वीक्ष्यानुरूपा।।'", which is a repeat of the second line of the next verse (95), with the closing quote of a lost star passage; the earlier lines are missing. The six lines (the label "f" means six lines) are CE star passages 13,027.087d*0241_01-02 (lines 1-2) and 13,027.087d*0242_01-04 (lines 3-6), which stand at exactly this place, between CE 087 (Wikisource 93) and CE 088 (Wikisource 95). They are not in the critical edition's numbered text. The repeated line is dropped.

Verse 95 (13.65.95)

sutā'vanīdhrasya harasya bhāryā | divo bhuvaścāpi kṛtānurūpā | bhavyā pṛthivyāṃ bhāginī cāpi rāja- | ngaṅgā lokānāṃ puṇyadā vai trayāṇām

Daughter of the mountain and wife of Hara, she has made herself a fitting ornament for heaven and earth; auspicious, and fortunate on earth, O king, the Ganga gives merit to all three worlds.

Note on the text: Corrected पृण्यदा → पुण्यदा (misprint in Wikisource; CE puṇyadā).

Verse 96 (13.65.96)

madhusravā ghṛtadhārā ghṛtārci- | rmahormibhiḥ śobhitā brāhmaṇaiśca | divaścyutā śirasā''ptā śivena | gaṅgā'vanīdhrāttridivasya mātā

Honey-flowing, ghee-streaming, with flames like ghee, adorned with great waves and by brahmins; fallen from heaven and received on Shiva's head, the Ganga, who came down from the mountain, is the mother of heaven.

Note on the text: CE 13,027.089a and 089c, with CE star lines 089b*0243_01-02 between them not in Wikisource. Variants: Wikisource madhusravā ghṛtadhārā … śirasāptā śivena gaṅgāvanīdhrāt tridivasya mātā, CE madhupravāhā … śirasāttā bhavena gaṅgāvanīdhrās tridivasya mālā; Wikisource's reading is kept. Verse 97 (13.65.97)

yonirvariṣṭhā virajā vitanvī | śayyā'cirā vārivahā yaśodā | viśvāvatī cākṛtiriṣṭasiddhā | gaṅgokṣitānāṃ bhuvanasya panthāḥ

The highest womb, spotless, slender, a resting-place, swift, bearer of water, giver of fame, protector of the universe, of fair form, one whose wishes are fulfilled - she is the road to the heavenly world for those sprinkled with the Ganga.

Verse 98 (13.65.98)

kṣāntyā mahyā gopane dhāraṇe ca | dīptyā kṛśānostapanasya caiva | tulyā gaṅgā sammatā brāhmaṇānāṃ | guhasya brahmaṇyatayā ca nityam

She is regarded as equal to the earth in patience, in guarding and in bearing, and equal in splendour to fire and to the sun; she is esteemed by brahmins, and ever esteemed by Guha for her goodwill toward brahmins.

Note on the text: Corrected दीप्त्य, कृशानो → दीप्त्या कृशानो (misprint in Wikisource; stray comma and short final a; CE dīptyā kṛśānos); Corrected गृहस्य ब्रह्मण्यतया → गुहस्य ब्रह्मण्यतया (misprint in Wikisource; CE guhasya, and the page's gloss says गुहस्य कुमारस्य).

Verse 99 (13.65.99)

ṛṣiṣṭutāṃ viṣṇupadīṃ purāṇāṃ | supuṇyatoyāṃ manasā'pi loke | sarvātmanā jāhnavīṃ ye prapannā | ste brahmaṇaḥ sadanaṃ samprayātāḥ

Praised by sages, sprung from Vishnu's foot, ancient, with most sacred waters, even by thought alone in this world - those who have wholly taken refuge in the Jahnavi have gone to the abode of Brahma.

Note on the text: Corrected प्रवन्ना → प्रपन्ना (misprint in Wikisource; CE prapannās).

Verse 100 (13.65.100)

lokānimānnayati yā jananīva putrā- | nsarvātmanā sarvaguṇopapannā | tatsthānakaṃ brāhmamabhīpsamānai- | rgaṅgā sadaivātmavaśairupāsyā

She who leads these worlds as a mother leads her sons, endowed in every way with every virtue - the Ganga should always be served by those who, master of themselves, long for the abode of Brahma.

Verse 101 (13.65.101)

usrāṃ juṣṭāṃ miṣatīṃ viśvatoyām | irāṃ vajrīṃ revatīṃ bhūdharāṇām | śiṣṭāśrayāmamṛtāṃ brahmakāntām | gaṅgāṃ śrayedātmavānsiddhikāmaḥ

Let the self-possessed man who longs for accomplishment resort to the Ganga: the radiant cow of plenty, the cherished, the all-seeing, whose waters are for all; the nourishing one, the one armed with the thunderbolt, the wealthy lady of the mountains; the refuge of the good, the immortal, the beloved of Brahma.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (13,027.094): Wikisource prints only the last line, labelled 13-65-101f, with the misprint गंङ्गां for गङ्गां; the first three lines are lost. Lines 1-2 are CE 13,027.094a, line 3 is the first half of CE 094c, and line 4 is the second half of 094c, which is Wikisource's lone line; written in Devanagari keeping CE's words exactly. The page's gloss on 13-65-101 discusses उस्रं, मिषतीं, हरावतीम्, ब्रह्मणोपि कान्ताम्, words of this lost passage.

Verse 102 (13.65.102)

prasādya devānsavibhūnsamastā- | nbhagīrathastapasogreṇa gaṅgām | gāmānayattāmabhigamya śaśva- | tpuṃsāṃ bhayaṃ neha cāmutra vidyāt

Having pleased all the gods and their lords by fierce austerity, Bhagiratha brought the Ganga to the earth; by going to her constantly, a man would have no fear here or hereafter.

Verse 103 (13.65.103)

udāhṛtaḥ sarvathā te guṇānāṃ | mayaikadeśaḥ prasamīkṣya buddhyā | śaktirna me kācidihāsti vaktuṃ | guṇānsarvānparimātuṃ tathaiva

I have set out to you only a part of her virtues, having weighed them with my understanding; I have no power here to recount all her virtues, nor to measure them.

Note on the text: Corrected बृद्ध्या → बुद्ध्या (misprint in Wikisource; CE buddhyā); Corrected न से → न मे (misprint in Wikisource; CE na me).

Verse 104 (13.65.104)

meroḥ samudrasya ca sarvayatnaiḥ | saṅkhyopalānāmudakasya vā'pi | śakyaṃ vaktuṃ neha gaṅgājalānāṃ | guṇākhyānaṃ parimātuṃ tathaiva

As one cannot, with every effort, count Meru, the ocean, the pebbles or the water, so one cannot here recount or measure the virtues of the Ganga's waters.

Verse 105 (13.65.105)

tasmādetānparayā śraddhayoktā- | nguṇānsarvāñjāhnavīyānsadaiva | bhavedvācā manasā karmaṇā ca | bhaktyā yuktaḥ śraddhayā śraddadhānaḥ

Therefore a man should always, in speech, mind and deed, be devoted and full of faith in all these virtues of the Jahnavi, which I have spoken of with the highest faith.

Note on the text: CE 13,027.098 with the variant bhavet … yuktaḥ for CE bhajet … yuktaḥ (the first half-verse's word order differs slightly); Wikisource's reading is kept. Alignment missed this verse.

Verse 106 (13.65.106)

lokānimāṃstrīnyaśasā vitatya | siddhiṃ prāpya mahatīṃ tāṃ durāpām | gaṅgākṛtānacireṇaiva lokā- | nyatheṣṭamiṣṭānvihariṣyasi tvam

Spreading your fame over these three worlds and gaining that great accomplishment so hard to attain, you will soon roam at will among the longed-for worlds that the Ganga bestows.

Verse 107 (13.65.107)

tava mama ca guṇairmahānubhāvā | juṣatu matiṃ satataṃ svadharmayuktaiḥ | abhimatajanavatsalā hi gaṅgā | jagati yunakti sukhaiśca bhaktimantam

May the exalted Ganga, through your virtues and mine joined with our own duties, ever favour our minds. For the Ganga, kind to those who are devoted to her, binds her devotee in this world to joys.

Note on the text: Corrected भतिं → मतिं (misprint in Wikisource; CE matiṃ, and the page's gloss says मतिं जुषतु).

iti paramamatirguṇānaśeṣā- | ñśilarataye tripathānuyogarūpān | bahuvidhamanuśāsya tathyarūpā- | ngaganatalaṃ dyutimānviveśa siddhaḥ

Having thus taught Shilavritti at length all those true qualities of the Ganga of the three paths, the Siddha of supreme wisdom, shining, entered the vault of the sky.

Verse 109 (13.65.109)

śilavṛttistu siddhasya vākyaiḥ sambodhitastadā | gaṅgāmupāsya vidhivatsiddhiṃ prāpa sudurlabhām

Awakened by the Siddha's words, Shilavritti duly worshipped the Ganga and attained an accomplishment very hard to win.

Verse 110 (13.65.110)

tathā tvamapi kaunteya bhaktyā paramayā yutaḥ | gaṅgāmabhyehi satataṃ prāpsyase siddhimuttamām

So you too, son of Kunti, endowed with supreme devotion, should go constantly to the Ganga; you will attain the highest accomplishment.

śrutvetihāsaṃ bhīṣmoktaṃ gaṅgāyāḥ stavasaṃyutam | yudhiṣṭhiraḥ parāṃ prītimagacchaddhātṛbhiḥ saha

Having heard this tale told by Bhishma, filled with the praise of the Ganga, Yudhishthira and his brothers felt the highest joy.
