How Vishvamitra Became a Brahmin
Answering Yudhishthira, Bhishma tells how Vishvamitra, born a kshatriya, attained brahmanhood. Gadhi of the Kushika line gives his daughter Satyavati to the sage Richika for a bride-price of a thousand moon-bright horses, which Varuna raises from the Ganga. Richika prepares two portions of consecrated rice, one to make a brahmin son and one a kshatriya; Satyavati's mother and Satyavati exchange them, and Richika at Satyavati's plea shifts the kshatriya nature to her grandson. So Jamadagni is born to Satyavati and Vishvamitra to her mother, and Bhishma lists Vishvamitra's brahmin sons.
