Vitahavya Becomes a Brahmin

At Yudhishthira's request, Bhishma tells how the royal sage Vitahavya attained brahmanhood. The hundred Haihaya sons of Vitahavya defeat and kill the Kashi kings; Divodasa, driven from Varanasi, takes refuge with Bharadvaja, whose sacrifice gives him a son, Pratardana. Pratardana destroys the Vitahavyas, and the survivor Vitahavya shelters with Bhrigu, who declares that there is no kshatriya in his hermitage, only brahmins. So by Bhrigu's word Vitahavya becomes a brahmarshi, and Bhishma gives the line of his descendants down to Shaunaka.
