The Merit of Tanks and Planting Trees

Yudhishthira asks what fruit comes from making groves and tanks. Bhishma praises the earth and the founding of tanks, which shelter every kind of creature, and tells the reward of a tank that keeps its water in each season of the year, from the agnihotra to the horse sacrifice. He then names the six classes of plants and explains that trees planted by a man become his sons, honour gods, ancestors and guests, and save him in the next world, and he urges Yudhishthira to make tanks, plant groves, perform sacrifices and always speak the truth.
