Maitreya Curses Duryodhana
Dhritarashtra begs Vyasa to instruct Duryodhana himself; Vyasa replies that the sage Maitreya, fresh from visiting the Pandavas, is on his way and will counsel him, and then departs. Maitreya urges Duryodhana to make peace, reminding him how Bhima killed the Rakshasa Kirmira and Jarasandha, but Duryodhana slaps his thigh and scratches the ground with his foot in contempt. Angered, Maitreya curses him that Bhima will break his thigh with his mace in a great war, the curse to lapse only if he makes peace, and leaves Vidura to tell the story of Kirmira.
