Brahma's Promise; Shiva's Boon to Sagara and the Birth of the Gourd
Brahma comforts the gods: in the course of time King Bhagiratha, acting for his kinsmen, will fill the ocean again. When Yudhishthira asks how, Lomasha begins the story of Sagara, a sonless king of the Ikshvaku line who practises austerities on Kailasa with his two wives, Vaidarbhi and Shaibya. Shiva grants that one wife will bear sixty thousand proud sons who will all perish together, and the other a single son to carry on the line. Shaibya bears a son, Vaidarbhi a gourd; as Sagara is about to throw it away, a voice from the sky tells him to keep its seeds in warmed pots of ghee, from which his sixty thousand sons will come.
