Ashtavakra at Janaka's Gate

On the way to King Janaka's sacrifice the boy Ashtavakra makes the king yield the road to a brahmin. At the gate of the sacrificial hall the doorkeeper turns him away as too young, and the two argue over whether years or learning make a man an elder. Ashtavakra then praises Janaka and declares that he will defeat Bandi, the debater who has his beaten opponents drowned; the king tests him with riddles and, satisfied with his answers, opens the door to him.
