Lomasha's Warning and Blessing on the Road to Kailasa
Lomasha tells Yudhishthira that they have passed Ushirabija, Mainaka, the White Mountain and Kalashaila, and stand where the Ganga flows in seven streams. He describes the gandharvas, kimpurushas, yakshas and rakshasas who serve Kubera and Manibhadra on the way to Kailasa, urges the Pandavas to be disciplined and ready, and calls on the gods, the rivers and the goddess Ganga to protect the king. Struck by the sage's unusual alarm, Yudhishthira tells his brothers to guard Draupadi, charges Bhima with her safety, and embraces and reassures the twins.

Verse 1 (3.141.1)
uśīrabījaṃ mainākaṃ giriṃ śvetaṃ ca bhārata | samatīto'si kaunteya kālaśailaṃ ca pārthiva
Lomasha said: You have passed Ushirabija, Mainaka and the White Mountain, O Bharata, and Kalashaila too, son of Kunti, O king.
Verse 2 (3.141.2)
eṣā gaṅgā saptavidhā rājate bharatarṣabha | sthānaṃ virajasaṃ puṇyaṃ yatrāgnirnityamidhyate
Here the Ganga shines in seven streams, bull of the Bharatas. This is the pure and holy place where the fire burns forever.
Verse 3 (3.141.3)
etadvai mānuṣeṇādya na śakyaṃ draṣṭumadbhutam | samādhiṃ kurutāvyagrāstīrthānyetāni drakṣyatha
No human being can see this marvel now. Compose your minds and keep them undistracted, and you will see these sacred places.
Verse 4 (3.141.4)
etaddrakṣyasi devānāmākrīḍaṃ caraṇāṅkitam | atikrānto'si kaunteya kālaśailaṃ ca parvatam
Here you will see the playground of the gods, marked with their footprints. You have passed beyond Mount Kalashaila, son of Kunti.
Note on the text: Corrected च रणाङ्कितम् → चरणाङ्कितम् (misprint in Wikisource; a misplaced word break that turns "marked with footprints" into "marked with battle"; the critical edition's apparatus reads caraṇāṅkitam) and अतिक्रान्तोसि → अतिक्रान्तोऽसि (missing avagraha). Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as 3.140.3d*0675.
Verse 5 (3.141.5)

We shall enter the White Mountain and Mount Mandara, where the yaksha Manivara lives, and Kubera, king of the yakshas.
Verse 6 (3.141.6)
aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi gandharvāḥ śīghragāminaḥ | tathā kiṃpuruṣā rājanyakṣāścaiva caturguṇāḥ
Eighty-eight thousand swift-moving gandharvas are there, O king, and four times as many kimpurushas and yakshas,
Verse 7 (3.141.7)
anekarūpasaṃsthānā nānāpraharaṇāśca te | yakṣendraṃ manujaśreṣṭha māṇibhadramupāsate
of many shapes and forms and bearing many kinds of weapons; they wait upon Manibhadra, lord of the yakshas, best of men.
Verse 8 (3.141.8)
teṣāmṛddhiratīvātra gatau vāyusamāśca te | sthānātpracyāvayeyurye devarājamapi dhruvam
Their power here is exceedingly great, and in speed they match the wind; they could surely drive even the king of the gods from his seat.
Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (3.140.7c): Wikisource's second line (यक्षेन्द्रं मनुजश्रेष्ठ माणिभद्रमुपासते) merely repeats the second line of the previous verse, in place of a lost line; it is replaced by the critical edition's line sthānāt pracyāvayeyur ye devarājam api dhruvam (स्थानात्प्रच्यावयेयुर्ये देवराजमपि ध्रुवम्). Line 1 is 3.140.7a of the critical edition, kept in Wikisource's reading (अतीवात्र for atīvāgryā).
Verse 9 (3.141.9)
taistāta balibhirguptā yātudhānaiśca rakṣitāḥ | durgamāḥ parvatāḥ pārtha samādhiṃ paramaṃ kuru
Guarded by those mighty beings, my son, and protected by yatudhanas, these mountains are hard to cross, Partha; keep your mind wholly composed.
Verse 10 (3.141.10)
kuberasacivāścānye raudrā maitrāśca rākṣasāḥ | taiḥ sameṣyāma kaunteya yatto vikramaṇe bhava
There are other counsellors of Kubera as well, rakshasas both fierce and friendly. We shall meet them, son of Kunti; be ready to show your valour.
Verse 11 (3.141.11)
kailāsaḥ parvato rājanṣaḍyojanaśatocchritaḥ | yatra devāḥ samāyānti viśālā yatra bhārata
Mount Kailasa, O king, rises six hundred yojanas high; there the gods assemble, and there too is Vishala, O Bharata.
Note on the text: Corrected पड्योजन → षड्योजन (misprint in Wikisource; प for ष, critical edition ṣaḍyojana-) and restored a missing word space (यत्रदेवाः → यत्र देवाः).
Verse 12 (3.141.12)
asaṅkhyeyāstu kaunteya yakṣarākṣasakinnarāḥ | nāgāḥ suparṇā gandharvāḥ kuberasadanaṃ prati
Countless yakshas, rakshasas and kinnaras, nagas, suparnas and gandharvas make their way toward Kubera's abode, son of Kunti.
Verse 13 (3.141.13)
tānvigāhasva pārthādya tapasā ca damena ca | rakṣyamāṇo mayā rājanbhīmasenabalena ca
Make your way among them today, Partha, by austerity and self-control, protected by me, O king, and by Bhimasena's strength.
Verse 14 (3.141.14)
svasti te varuṇo rājā yamaśca samitiṃjayaḥ | gaṅgā ca yamunā caiva parvatāśca diśantu te
May King Varuna and Yama, victor in battle, the Ganga and the Yamuna, and the mountains grant you well-being.
Verse 15 (3.141.15)
marutaśca sahāśvibhyāṃ saritaśca sarāṃsi ca | svasti devāsurebhyaśca vasubhyaśca mahādyute
May the Maruts with the two Ashvins, the rivers and the lakes, grant you well-being; and may well-being come to you from the gods and the asuras, and from the Vasus, O glorious one.
Note on the text: Corrected वसुभ्यश् → वसुभ्यश्च (misprint in Wikisource; dropped च, which the metre needs; the critical edition's apparatus reads vasubhyaś ca). Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as 3.140.13d*0676.
Verse 16 (3.141.16)
indrasya jāmbūnadaparvatādvai | śṛṇomi ghoṣaṃ tava devi gaṅge | gopāyayemaṃ subhage giribhyaḥ | sarvājamīḍhāpacitaṃ narendram
O goddess Ganga, I hear your roar from the golden mountain of Indra. Shield this king from the mountains, blessed one, this lord of men honoured by all the Ajamidhas.
Note on the text: Lines are 3.140.14a–d of the critical edition (reading पर्वताद्वै for parvatāgre).
Verse 17 (3.141.17)
dadasva śarma pravivikṣato'sya | śailānimāñchailasute nṛpasya | śivapradā sarvasaritpradhāne | sabhrātṛkasyeha yudhiṣṭhirasya
Grant shelter, daughter of the mountain, to this king who is about to enter these mountains; chief of all rivers, be the bringer of blessing to Yudhishthira here with his brothers.
Note on the text: Removed stray wiki quote marks (` ') and corrected स भ्रातृकस्य → सभ्रातृकस्य (misprint in Wikisource; a false word break in the compound 'with his brothers', as the critical edition's apparatus reads sabhrātṛkasya). Lines 1–2 are 3.140.14e–f of the critical edition (reading ददस्व for bhavasva); lines 3–4 are not in its constituted text and appear in its apparatus as 3.140.14f*0678 (found in the vulgate recension).

Yudhishthira said: This alarm of Lomasha is something new. All of you, guard Krishna; let there be no carelessness. He holds this region to be the hardest of all to cross; so practise the utmost purity here.

tato'bravīdbhīmamudāravīryaṃ | kṛṣṇāṃ yattaḥ pālaya bhīmasena | śūnye'rjune'sannihite ca tāta | tvāmeva kṛṣṇā bhajate bhayeṣu
Vaishampayana said: Then he said to Bhima of noble valour: 'Guard Krishna carefully, Bhimasena. With Arjuna away and not at hand, my son, it is to you alone that Krishna turns in times of danger.'
Verse 20 (3.141.20)

Then the great-souled king went to the twins, kissed them on the head and stroked their limbs, and said to them, his voice choked with tears: 'Do not be afraid; go forward with care.'
Note on the text: Corrected महात्मां → महात्मा (misprint in Wikisource; stray anusvara, critical edition mahātmā) and बैष्टम् → भैष्टम् (ब for भ; the commentary and the critical edition read bhaiṣṭam), and restored a missing word space (विमृज्यगात्रे → विमृज्य गात्रे).
