A Voice Turns Yudhishthira Back from Gandhamadana

Yudhishthira reviews with his brothers and the brahmins the tirthas, rivers, mountains and hermitages they have visited under Lomasha's guidance, and asks Bhima how they are to reach Gandhamadana, Kubera's dwelling, which is hard to reach. A bodiless voice tells him that the mountain cannot be reached from here: he must go back to Badari, then on to the hermitage of Vrishaparvan and that of Arshtishena, after which he will see Kubera's abode. A fragrant wind showers flowers, Dhaumya advises turning back, and Yudhishthira returns with his brothers, Draupadi and the brahmins to the hermitage of Nara and Narayana. The whole adhyaya is absent from the critical edition's text and appears in its Appendix I (No. 17).
