Arjuna Reaches the City Beneath the Sea

Arjuna describes crossing the ocean, heaving with waves and full of ships, sea monsters, conches and jewels, and arriving before the city of the daityas. At the thunder of the chariot the danavas, taking him for Indra, shut their gates in fear; but when he blew the conch Devadatta the Nivatakavachas poured out in thousands, armed with every kind of weapon. Matali drove the chariot among them so swiftly that it could not be followed, the danavas raised a din that sent the great fish fleeing, and the battle began, with the sages gathering to praise Arjuna.

tato'haṃ stūyamānastu tatratatra surarṣibhiḥ | apaśyamudadhiṃ bhīmamapāṃpatimathāvyayam

Then, praised here and there by the divine sages, I beheld the fearsome ocean, the imperishable lord of the waters.

Note on the text: Corrected सुरपिभिः → सुरर्षिभिः (misprint in Wikisource; प for र्ष, which yields no word; the critical edition reads maharṣibhiḥ at this place).

phenavatyaḥ prakīrṇāśca saṃhatāśca samucchritāḥ | ūrmayaścātra dṛśyante calanta iva parvatāḥ

Its waves, foaming, scattered and massed together, towering high, could be seen there like moving mountains.

Note on the text: Corrected समुच्छिताः → समुच्छ्रिताः (misprint in Wikisource; dropped र, the critical edition reads samucchritāḥ) and restored a missing word space (चलन्तइव → चलन्त इव). Matches the first two lines of CE 3.166.2.

Ships by the thousand, laden with jewels, were all around, and they shone as they moved, like celestial chariots in the sky.

Note on the text: Removed stray wiki marks (` and ') around the second line. The first line is the last line of CE 3.166.2; the second line is not in the critical edition's text (its apparatus has it as 3.166.2f*0848).
