Narayana Reveals Himself to Markandeya
The god in the form of a child explains himself to Markandeya: he is Narayana, whose abode is the waters, the source and end of all beings, the cosmic body in which the worlds, the gods, the four classes and the Vedas reside. He tells how he takes birth whenever dharma declines, how his colour changes through the four ages, and how he sleeps through a thousand cycles of ages until Brahma wakes, and he grants the sage leave to wander at ease. Markandeya then tells the Pandavas that this god is their kinsman Krishna and urges them to take refuge in him; they and Draupadi bow to Krishna, who comforts them.

Becoming the fire in the mare's mouth, O best of brahmins, I forever drink up the waters, O wise one, and I release them again.
Note on the text: Corrected बडबावक्रे → बडबावक्त्रे (misprint in Wikisource; broken conjunct क्र for क्त्र, "crooked" for "mouth"; the critical edition reads vaḍavāvaktro). The locative ending and सदा विद्वंस् are recension variants and are kept.

It is I alone who have apportioned them so, to accomplish the purposes of the gods. Desire, anger, joy, fear and delusion as well — know all of these to be the hairs of my body, O good man.
Note on the text: The first line (मयैव सुविभक्तास्ते …) is not in the critical edition's constituted text; its apparatus has it as the insertion 3.187.19d*0939, after the line on the oceans. रोमाणि is a recension variant of the critical edition's rūpāṇi and is kept.

madvidhānena vihitā mama dehavihāriṇaḥ | mayā'bhibhūtavijñānā viceṣṭante na kāmataḥ

O learned one, I cannot be reached by men of evil deeds, by the greedy and the mean, by the ignoble and those whose spirit is unformed.
Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (3.187.24): Wikisource has lost the opening aksharas of both lines, printed as "---" (---न शक्यो … / ---भाभिभूतैः …); restored प्राप्तुं and लो(भाभिभूतैः) from the critical edition's prāptuṃ na śakyo … lobhābhibhūtaiḥ.

Know, then, that the state won by those who do good works bears great fruit. It is very hard for the deluded to reach; it is a path frequented through yoga.
Verse 26 (3.192.26)

tadā'haṃsaṃprasūyāmi gṛheṣu śubhakarmaṇām | praviṣṭo mānuṣaṃ dehaṃ sarvaṃ praśamayāmyaham
then I am born in the homes of those whose deeds are pure, and, entering a human body, I bring everything to peace.

Note on the text: Corrected मानषं → मानुषं (misprint in Wikisource; dropped vowel sign, the critical edition reads mānuṣaṃ). आविश्य is a recension variant of praviśya and is kept.

śvetaḥ kṛtayuge varṇaḥ pītastretāyuge mama | śyāmo dvāparamāsādya kṛṣṇaḥ kaliyuge tathā

Note on the text: Corrected ह्यधर्मस् → ह्यधर्मस्य (misprint in Wikisource; dropped akshara, the critical edition reads hy adharmasya), भवनति → भवन्ति (misprint; broken conjunct) and द्विजसत्तम् → द्विजसत्तम (stray virama on a vocative); removed stray wiki quote marks (` … ') around the second line. The second line is not in the critical edition's constituted text; its apparatus has it as the insertion 3.187.32b*0941 (with munisattama). The critical edition runs this verse on with the next (Wikisource 33) as 3.187.32cd–ef.

And when the time of the end arrives, I become Time, most terrible, and alone I destroy the three worlds entire, with all that moves and all that does not move.
Note on the text: This is the critical edition's 3.187.32cd–ef, the second half of its six-pada verse 32.

I am the one of the three paths, the soul of the universe, who brings happiness to all the worlds; unconquered, all-pervading, endless, Hrishikesha, the wide-striding one. Alone and formless, O brahmin, I turn the wheel of time,
Note on the text: Lines 1–2 are the critical edition's 3.187.33; line 3 is its 3.187.34ab. विश्वात्मा, अजितः and अरूपकम् are recension variants of sarvātmā, abhibhūḥ and arūpi vai and are kept.

the wheel that brings all beings to rest and is at work in every age. Thus, O best of sages, I am set firmly within all beings by my power of illusion, O lord of brahmins, and yet no one knows me.
Note on the text: Line 1 is the critical edition's 3.187.34cd (सर्वकाल- for its sarvaloka-); lines 2–3 are its 3.187.35 (मायया for mayātmā, a recension variant kept here).

yacca kiṃcittvayā loke dṛṣṭaṃ sthāvarajaṅgamam | vihitaḥ sarvathaivāsau mamātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ
Whatever you have seen in the world, moving and unmoving, is ordained in every way: it is my own self, the source of all beings.

ardhaṃ mama śarīrasya sarvalokapitāmahaḥ | ahaṃ nārāyaṇo nāma śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ

yāvadyugānāṃ viprarṣe sahasraparivartanam | tāvatsvapimi viśvātmā sarvalokapitāmahaḥ
For as long as a thousand cycles of the ages take to turn, O brahmin sage, so long do I sleep — I, the soul of the universe, the Grandfather of all the worlds.

So I remain here all that time, O best of sages, no child yet in the form of a child, until Brahma awakens.
Verse 42 (3.192.42)
mayā ca datto viprāgrya varaste brahmarūpiṇā | asakṛtparituṣṭena viprarṣigaṇapūjita
And it was I, in the form of Brahma, pleased with you again and again, who granted you your boon, O foremost of brahmins, honoured by the hosts of brahmin sages.

When you saw everything become a single ocean, with all that moves and does not move destroyed, you were distressed. I knew it, and so I showed you the world.
Note on the text: Corrected विक्लबोसि → विक्लबोऽसि (missing avagraha; the critical edition reads viklavo 'si).
Verse 44 (3.192.44)
abhyantaraṃ śarīrasya praviṣṭo'si yadā mama | dṛṣṭvā lokaṃ samastaṃ ca vismito nāvabudhyase
When you entered the inside of my body and saw the whole world there, you were astonished and could not understand.

tato'si vaktrādviprarṣe drutaṃ niḥsārito mayā | ākhyātaste mayā cātmā durjñeyo'pi surāsuraiḥ
Then, O brahmin sage, I quickly brought you out of my mouth, and I have told you of my self, which even the gods and the asuras find hard to know.
Note on the text: Corrected ततोसि → ततोऽसि (missing avagraha), वक्राद् → वक्त्राद् (misprint in Wikisource; broken conjunct) and दुर्ज्ञे योपि → दुर्ज्ञेयोऽपि (misprint; one word split, missing avagraha); the critical edition reads tato 'si vaktrād … durjñeyo 'pi.

tato vibuddhe tasmiṃstu sarvalokapitāmahe | ekībhūtaḥ pravekṣyāmi śarīrāṇi dvijottama

This, O king, is the marvel I saw when that end of the age had come, O best of the Bharatas, foremost of all who uphold dharma.
Note on the text: Corrected सर्वधर्मभृतांवरः → सर्वधर्मभृतां वर (misprint in Wikisource; nominative for the vocative addressed to Yudhishthira, the critical edition reads sarvadharmabhṛtāṃ vara).
Verse 51 (3.192.51)

This is Krishna of the Vrishni line, the ancient Person, the all-pervading lord — Hari, of unthinkable self, the mighty-armed, who sits here as though at play.
Note on the text: Corrected वार्ष्णेय → वार्ष्णेयः (misprint in Wikisource; dropped visarga — the epithet describes Krishna, not the person addressed; the critical edition reads vārṣṇeyaḥ).
Verse 54 (3.192.54)

When I saw this foremost of the Vrishnis, this memory came back to me — of the primal god, the unborn, the victorious Person clad in yellow.
Note on the text: Corrected आदिदेवमयं → आदिदेवमजं (misprint in Wikisource; य for ज, the critical edition reads ādidevam ajaṃ). जिष्णुं and वृष्णिप्रवरं are recension variants of viṣṇuṃ and vṛṣṇiśārdūlaṃ and are kept.
