Markandeya Foretells the End of the Kali Age and the Coming of Kalki

Yudhishthira asks Markandeya what will become of the world at the close of the Kali age. Markandeya describes how dharma declines from four feet to one through the four ages, then paints the last age in detail: shortened lives, greed and deceit, the mixing of the classes, oppressive kings, women and children turned against their families, unseasonable rain, portents in the sky and the abandonment of gods and rites. When the sun, the moon, Tishya and Jupiter meet in one sign the Krita age will return, and a brahmin named Kalki Vishnuyashas, born in the village of Sambhala, will become a righteous world-ruler and destroy the hordes of barbarians.
