Shibi Saves the Dove from the Hawk
Markandeya tells how the gods resolved to test King Shibi, son of Ushinara: Agni took the form of a dove and Indra that of a hawk pursuing it, and the dove fell into the king's lap seeking refuge. Shibi refuses to give up the dove, offers the hawk a bull in its place, and at last, at the hawk's demand, cuts away his own flesh and finally climbs onto the scale himself to match the dove's weight. The gods reveal themselves, bless the wound as an auspicious golden mark, and promise him a son, Kapotaroman.
