Narada's Verdict on Four Royal Brothers; Shibi Gives Up His Son

Markandeya tells how Ashtaka, son of Vishvamitra, riding home from his horse sacrifice with his brothers Pratardana, Vasumanas and Shibi, gives Narada a seat in his chariot. Asked which of them would have to come down if only some could reach heaven, Narada names Ashtaka (who boasted of his gifts of cows), then Pratardana (who gave away his horses grudgingly), then Vasumanas (who kept promising his flower-chariot without giving it), and says he himself would give way to Shibi. For Shibi, at a Brahmin's demand, killed and cooked his own son Brihadgarbha without anger and was ready to eat the dish himself; the Brahmin, who was the Creator testing him, restored the boy to life, and Shibi tells his ministers that he gives not for fame or gain but because this is the path of the good.
