Indradyumna Is Restored to Heaven
Asked whether anyone is older than he is, Markandeya tells of the royal sage Indradyumna, who fell from heaven when his merit was spent because his fame on earth had died out. In search of someone who still remembered him, the king carried Markandeya to the owl Prakarakarna on the Himalaya, then to the crane Nadijangha, and at last to the tortoise Akupara, who wept as he recalled the king's sacrifices and the lake dug by the hooves of the cows he gave away. At once a celestial chariot came for Indradyumna, and the adhyaya closes with verses on how a man's good name keeps him in heaven, and with Markandeya recalling that Krishna likewise rescued King Nriga.

He thought for a moment; then, his eyes full of tears, his heart deeply stirred, trembling and almost senseless, he joined his palms and said: "How could I not recognize him?
