The Birth of Savitri
Yudhishthira asks whether any woman has ever been as devoted to her husband as Draupadi, and Markandeya begins the story of Savitri. Ashvapati, the childless king of the Madras, worships the goddess Savitri for eighteen years; pleased, she promises him a radiant daughter, who is born and named Savitri. When no suitor dares to ask for the dazzling girl, her father tells her to choose a husband herself, and she sets out in a golden chariot with his old ministers, visiting the hermitages of royal sages and giving gifts at the holy places.
