Surya Tells Karna to Ask Indra for the Spear

Karna answers the Sun with devotion but holds to his vow: he fears falsehood more than death and will give even his life to Indra if Indra begs of him. Surya then advises him to give the earrings and armour only in exchange for Indra's unfailing spear, which never returns to its owner's hand without slaying enemies. Karna wakes, resolves to do so, tells the Sun of his dream after his morning prayers, receives the god's smiling assent, and waits for Indra.
