Kunti Summons the Sun

Curious about the mantra's power, the young Pritha, having just reached womanhood, gazes at the rising sun from the palace roof, sees the god in armour and earrings with divine sight, and summons him. Surya arrives, dividing himself by yoga, and declares himself in her power; when she begs him to leave, he refuses to go back in vain, reminding her that her wish was for a son like him, and threatens to curse her, her father and the Brahmin if she will not unite with him. Shown the gods watching from the sky, Kunti pleads that her body is her elders' to give and asks forgiveness for a child's folly, but Surya insists that he cannot return mocked and promises her a son like himself.

gate tasmindvijaśreṣṭhe kasmiṃścitkālaparyaye | cintayāmāsa sā kanyā mantragrāmabalābalam

When that best of Brahmins had gone, and some time had passed, the maiden pondered the strength or weakness of the set of mantras:

Verse 2 (3.307.2)

ayaṃ vai kīdṛśastena mama datto mahātmanā | mantragrāmo balaṃ tasya jñāsye nāticirāditi

"What kind of mantras are these that the great-souled one has given me? I shall know their power before long."

Note on the text: Corrected दत्तो हमात्मना → दत्तो महात्मना (misprint in Wikisource; the akshara म dropped; the critical edition reads datto mahātmanā).

Verse 3 (3.307.3)

evaṃ saṃcintayantī sā dadarśartuṃ yadṛcchayā | vrīḍitā sā'bhavadbālā kanyābhāve rajasvalā

As she was thinking this, she happened to see the onset of her season, and the young girl was abashed to have her courses while still a maiden.

Verse 4 (3.307.4)

tato harmyatalasthā sā mahārhaśayanocitā | prācyāṃ diśi samudyantaṃ dadarśādityamaṇḍalam

Then, as she stood on the palace roof — she who was used to costly beds — she saw the disc of the sun rising in the eastern quarter.

Note on the text: Line 1 is not in the critical edition text but in its apparatus (*1339, after 3.290.3); line 2 parallels CE 3.290.4ab in sense with different wording (athodyantaṃ sahasrāṃśuṃ pṛthā dīptaṃ dadarśa ha).

Verse 5 (3.307.5)

tatra baddhamanodṛṣṭirabhavatsā sumadhyamā | na cātapyata rūpeṇa bhānoḥ sandhyāgatasya sā

Her mind and her gaze became fixed on it, the slender-waisted girl, and she was not scorched by the form of the sun at dawn.

Note on the text: Line 1 is in the critical edition's apparatus (*1340, within 3.290.4); line 2 = CE 3.290.4cd (the CE reads na tatarpa, "was not sated", where Wikisource has न चातप्यत; kept).

tasyāḥ kautūhalaṃ tvāsīnmantraṃ prati narādhipa | āhvānamakarotsā'tha tasya devasya bhāminī

madhupiṅgo mahābāhuḥ kambugrīvo hasanniva | aṅgadī baddhamukuṭo diśaḥ prajvālayanniva

honey-tawny, mighty-armed, with a neck like a conch, as if smiling, wearing armlets and a diadem, as if setting the quarters ablaze.

Verse 10 (3.307.10)

yogātkṛtvā dvidhā''tmānamājagāma tatāpa ca | ābabhāṣe tataḥ kuntīṃ sāmnā paramavalgunā

By his yogic power he made himself twofold: he came to her, and he went on blazing in the sky as well. Then he spoke to Kunti in the gentlest and sweetest words.

Note on the text: Corrected परमबल्गुना → परमवल्गुना (misprint in Wikisource; ब for व (valgu, "sweet"); the critical edition reads paramavalgunā).
