The Brahmin Gives Pritha the Mantra
For a full year Pritha serves the exacting Brahmin without fault, though he comes and goes at odd hours, asks for food that is hard to find and scolds her harshly. Pleased, he offers her boons; when she declines, saying his favour and her father's are enough, he gives her instead a mantra from the Atharvashiras that will bring any god she summons under her power, willing or not. She dares not refuse a second time for fear of a curse, and the Brahmin takes leave of Kuntibhoja and vanishes before the astonished king.
