Nala Goes as the Gods' Messenger
Having promised to serve the four gods, Nala learns that they are Indra, Agni, Varuna and Yama and that they want him to carry their suit to Damayanti. He protests that he loves her himself, but Indra holds him to his word and makes him invisible to the palace guards. Nala enters Damayanti's apartments, where her companions are struck dumb by his beauty, and when she asks who he is, he tells her his name and delivers the gods' message.
