Damayanti's Answer to the Gods' Messenger
Damayanti offers herself to Nala and says she will die rather than be refused. Nala urges her to choose one of the gods, praising Agni, Yama, Indra and Varuna in turn, and says that as a messenger he cannot seek his own gain. Damayanti proposes a way out: Nala and the gods should all come to her svayamvara, where she will choose him in their presence so that no blame falls on him. Nala returns and reports everything faithfully to the gods.
