The Caravan Destroyed; Damayanti in the City of Chedi
Damayanti travels on with the merchants' caravan. At midnight, while the caravan sleeps beside a lotus lake, a herd of wild elephants tramples it; the survivors blame the strange woman who joined them, and Damayanti flees, lamenting that some sin of a former birth, or the anger of the gods she refused at her svayamvara, has brought this on her. With a few surviving brahmins she reaches the city of Subahu, king of Chedi, where the queen mother takes her in. Calling herself a sairandhri, Damayanti tells her story, agrees to stay on strict conditions, and lives with the princess Sunanda, thinking always of Nala.
