Karkotaka Transforms Nala

After leaving Damayanti, Nala comes upon a forest fire and hears a voice calling his name from within it. He rescues the serpent king Karkotaka, who had been cursed by a sage to stay motionless until Nala should carry him away. Karkotaka bites him at the tenth step and changes his form so that no one will recognise him, explaining that his venom will torment Kali, who possesses Nala, and that Nala himself will be safe from poison, beasts and enemies. He sends Nala to King Rituparna of Ayodhya as the charioteer Bahuka, to exchange the secret of horses for the secret of dice, promises that he will regain his wife, children and kingdom, and gives him a pair of divine garments to restore his true form.
