The Southern Fords, Prayaga, and the End of Pulastya's Teaching

Pulastya completes his catalogue of sacred fords for Bhishma, moving from the east (Sandhya, Lauhitya, Karatoya, the Ganga's meeting with the sea) through the south (Mahendra, Shriparvata, the Kaveri, Kanyatirtha, Gokarna, the Godavari, Dandaka, Shurparaka, the Tungaka forest where the lost Vedas were recovered) and back north by Kalanjara, Chitrakuta and Shringaberapura to Prayaga, which he praises above every other tirtha. He extols the Ganga and the merit of hearing this account, blesses Bhishma and vanishes. Narada then tells Yudhishthira that by taking the waiting seers on this pilgrimage, with Lomasha as guide, he will win eightfold merit, and departs; Yudhishthira reports his words to the seers.

Next, going to the Sandhya and bathing at Samvedya, that excellent ford, a man gains knowledge; of this there is no doubt.

Note on the text: Wikisource prints no speaker heading on this page; Pulastya's discourse to Bhishma continues from adhyaya 82 (the critical edition opens 3.83 with 'pulastya uvāca'), so verses 1–111 are assigned to Pulastya.

Verse 2 (3.83.2)

Note on the text: Corrected गोसहस्रफंल → गोसहस्रफलं and रपुनाति → पुनाति (misprints in Wikisource; misplaced anusvara and a stray र).

शोणस्य ज्योतिरथ्यायाः संगमे नियतः शुचिः । तर्पयित्वा पितॄन्देवानग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥

Reaching the Rishabha tirtha in Kosala, O lord of men, a man who fasts there for three nights obtains the Vajapeya; he gains the fruit of a thousand cows and uplifts his family as well.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (3.83.10ab): Wikisource lacks the line naming the tirtha (ṛṣabhaṃ tīrtham āsādya kośalāyāṃ narādhipa), leaving the verse with no place; it is supplied as the first line. Wikisource's two lines follow unchanged: the first matches 3.83.10cd, the second resembles 3.83.12cd and is not in the critical edition at this point.

Verse 11 (3.83.11)

One without a son gains a son, and the poor man gains wealth; the shudra gains what he desires, and the brahmin who recites it masters learning; a king conquers the earth, and a vaishya gains riches.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text; it is in the apparatus as 3.83.86d*0448, lines 3–5 (vulgate recension), where the last two lines stand in the opposite order.

yaścedaṃ śṛṇuyānnityaṃ tīrthapuṇyaṃ naraḥ śuciḥ | jātīḥ sa smarate bahvīrnākapṛṣṭhe ca modate

The pure man who listens daily to this account of the merit of the tirthas remembers many births and rejoices on the vault of heaven.

Verse 104 (3.83.104)

गम्यान्यपि च तीर्थानि कीर्तितान्यगमानि च । मनसा तानि गच्छेत सर्वतीर्थसमीक्षया ॥

gamyānyapi ca tīrthāni kīrtitānyagamāni ca | manasā tāni gaccheta sarvatīrthasamīkṣayā

So you too, Kauravya of good vows, go to the tirthas by this rule, self-restrained, increasing merit by merit.

Note on the text: Corrected व्रत → व्रज (misprint in Wikisource; the imperative 'go' is required; the critical edition reads vraja).

Verse 107 (3.83.107)

These tirthas are reached by the good who see the meaning of the scriptures, with their senses trained beforehand, through faith and insight into revelation. One should go to them together with good brahmins who know the true meaning of the scriptures.

Note on the text: Corrected भाषितैः → भावितैः and तीर्तानि → तीर्थानि (misprints in Wikisource; ष for व and त for थ; the critical edition reads bhāvitaiḥ, and Wikisource's own note glosses करणैः as इन्द्रियैः, i.e. trained senses). your father, your grandfather and all your great-grandfathers; and the gods headed by the Grandfather, with the hosts of seers, O king, have ever been gladdened by your righteousness, O knower of dharma.

Note on the text: Corrected पितामहस्चैव → पितामहश्चैव (misprint; स्च for श्च) and नित्यमेवाभितोषितः → नित्यमेवाभितोषिताः (dropped ā; the subjects are plural, as in the critical edition's abhitoṣitāḥ). Line 1 is not in the critical edition (vulgate recension); lines 2–3 are 3.83.94.

Note on the text: Corrected महातीं → महतीं (misprint in Wikisource) and the verse-final शाश्वतीं → शाश्वतीम् (pausal form).
