The Brahmins Join the Pilgrimage; the Pandavas Set Out
As Yudhishthira prepares to leave, the forest-dwelling brahmins beg to come with him, since the tirthas are beset by beasts and rakshasas and cannot be reached without the Pandavas' protection; moved to tears, he agrees. Vyasa, Narada and Parvata then visit him in Kamyaka and teach that pilgrims must be pure in mind as well as disciplined in body, for a mind free of malice and full of friendliness is the true purification. After the full moon of Margashirsha, under the Pushya star, the Pandavas, Draupadi and Dhaumya set out eastward in bark garments and deerskins, armed and armoured, with more than fourteen chariots and their servants.
