Vyasa Offers a Boon; Dhritarashtra and Gandhari Ask to See the Dead
Janamejaya asks how long Yudhishthira stayed in the forest and what the Pandavas ate there. Vaishampayana tells how they lived for a month at the hermitage, until Vyasa arrived with Narada and other sages and offered the elders a boon. Dhritarashtra speaks of his grief for his sinful son and for the kings and warriors who died, and asks what fate they have won. Gandhari adds her own plea, naming the sorrowing women of the house, and Kunti, remembering her hidden son, bows to Vyasa and begins to speak.

His hundred wives here, struck by grief and sorrow, again and again swelling the grief of the king and my own, wait upon me, O great sage, in great distress, their food given up.

And what is the destination, O lord, of those brave, great-souled, great chariot-warriors who were my fathers-in-law, Somadatta and the rest?

Then Vyasa said to her, "Say what you wish to have done; tell it, O fortunate one, whatever is in your mind."
Note on the text: Line a is narration, line b is Vyasa's speech (shared verse; kept with the narrator).
Verse 56 (15.31.56)
श्वशुराय ततः कुन्ती प्रणम्य शिरसा तदा । उवाच वाक्यं सव्रीडा विवृण्वाना पुरातनम् ॥
