The Ten Kapila Cows and the Merit of Giving a Kapila

Yudhishthira asks Krishna how, when and to whom the Kapila cow, made by Brahma for the sacred fire, should be given. Krishna describes her fiery origin, condemns the Shudras who live off her produce and the brahmins who accept gifts from them, and names ten kinds of Kapila, with rules on how oxen may be yoked. He then sets out the fruits of seeing, touching and giving a Kapila, comparing them with the great sacrifices.

The page’s 58b (भ्रूणहत्यासमं पापं …) comes before 59a, whereas the critical edition has that line after the रुधिरं line.

The same line is 14,096.015d@004_1841 in the critical edition.

Verse 62 (14.105.62)

कपिलां वाहयेद्यस्तु वृषलो लोभमोहितः । तेन देवास्त्रयस्त्रिंशत्पितरश्चापि वाहिताः ॥

kapilāṃ vāhayedyastu vṛṣalo lobhamohitaḥ | tena devāstrayastriṃśatpitaraścāpi vāhitāḥ

Note on the text: Not in the critical text: Appendix I, No. 4 (printed in the CE file after 14.96.15 as 14,096.015d@004), line 1873 (line 1) and lines 1874–1875 (lines 3–4); line 2 (सुवर्णखुरशृङ्गाङ्गीं सर्वालङ्कारशोभिताम्) is not in the appendix. Corrected सुवर्णकुरशृङ्गाङ्गीं → सुवर्णखुरशृङ्गाङ्गीं (misprint in Wikisource; क for ख, "hooves"; the critical edition and verses 69–70 read khura). Restored from the critical edition (14,096.015d@004_1874–1875): Wikisource prints only two lines for this verse (75a, 75b), leaving the sentence without its main verb; lines 3–4 (तैस्तैर्गुणैः कामदुघा च भूत्वा / नरं प्रदातारमुपैति सा गौः) are added in the critical edition’s words.

Note on the text: Not in the critical text: Appendix I, No. 4 (printed in the CE file after 14.96.15 as 14,096.015d@004), lines 1876–1879.
