The Origin of the Kapila, the Gods Within Her, and Worthy Recipients of Gifts

Yudhishthira asks how the deities dwell in the limbs of a Kapila and which of the ten Kapilas are best. Krishna names the right time to give her, the merit of giving and of reciting the account, and the four foremost kinds; he tells how Brahma made her from the fire-pit, how the gods gave her a boon, and which gods and powers abide in each part of her body. Asked about the right time for offerings to the gods and ancestors, he lists the brahmins unfit and fit to be honoured at a shraddha, and then those who go to hell and those who go to heaven.

Verse 106 (14.106.106)

क्षेमाक्षेमं च मार्गेषु समानि विषमाणि च । अर्थिनां ये च वक्ष्यन्ति ते नराः स्वर्गगामिनः ॥

kṣemākṣemaṃ ca mārgeṣu samāni viṣamāṇi ca | arthināṃ ye ca vakṣyanti te narāḥ svargagāminaḥ

Those who tell inquirers about the roads — which are safe and which unsafe, which level and which uneven — those men go to heaven.

Note on the text: Not in the critical text: Appendix I, No. 4 (printed in the CE file after 14.96.15 as 14,096.015d@004), lines 2127–2128.

Verse 107 (14.106.107)

parvadvaye caturdaśyāmaṣṭamyāṃ saṃdhyayordvayoḥ | ārdrāyāṃ janmanakṣatre viṣuve śravaṇe'thavā | ye grāmyadharmaviratāste narāḥ svargagāminaḥ

Those who abstain from sexual union on both parvas, on the fourteenth and the eighth lunar days, at both twilights, under the Ardra star, under their birth-star, at the equinox, or under Shravana — those men go to heaven.

Note on the text: Not in the critical text: Appendix I, No. 4 (printed in the CE file after 14.96.15 as 14,096.015d@004), lines 2129–2131. Corrected स्वर्गगाप्तिनः → स्वर्गगामिनः (misprint in Wikisource; प्ति for मि; the critical edition reads svargagāminaḥ).

Verse 108 (14.106.108)

हव्यकव्यविधानं च नरकस्वर्गगामिनौ । धर्माधर्मौ च कथितौ किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥

havyakavyavidhānaṃ ca narakasvargagāminau | dharmādharmau ca kathitau kiṃ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi

The rule of offerings to the gods and the ancestors, those who go to hell and those who go to heaven, dharma and adharma — all have been told. What more do you wish to hear?

Note on the text: Not in the critical text: Appendix I, No. 4 (printed in the CE file after 14.96.15 as 14,096.015d@004), lines 2132–2133. The CE appendix prints a "Yudhishthira uvāca" heading inside this verse (before 14,096.015d@004_2133, line 2); the page prints no heading, so the verse stays whole with Vasudeva.
