Krishna Tells the Story of Indra and Vritra
After Vyasa has spoken, Krishna turns to the despondent Yudhishthira and tells him that his real work is not yet done, since he has not recognised the enemy that lives in his own body. He illustrates this with the old battle between Indra and Vritra: Vritra pervaded the earth, water, fire, wind and space in turn, seizing each sphere of sense, and was struck by Indra's thunderbolt each time, until he entered Indra himself. Vasishtha roused the bewildered Indra with the Rathantara chant, and Indra then slew Vritra within his body.
