Marutta's Sacrifice, and Vyasa Urges Yudhishthira to Take the Gold

Indra sends the Gandharva Dhritarashtra to warn Marutta to choose Brihaspati or face the thunderbolt, but Marutta refuses. When the roar of the thunderbolt is heard, Samvarta calms him with his power of paralysis and calls Indra to the sacrifice by mantras. Indra comes, is honoured, and arranges the sacrificial ground himself; the gods take their shares, and Marutta gives away great heaps of gold. Vyasa ends by urging Yudhishthira to take that gold for his own sacrifice, and Yudhishthira consults his ministers.

evametadbrahmabalaṃ garīyo | na brāhmaṇātkiñcidanyadgarīyaḥ | āvikṣitasya tu balaṃ na mṛṣye | vajramasmai prahariṣyāmi ghoram

So it is: the power of a brahmin is the greater, and nothing else is greater than a brahmin. Yet I cannot endure the might of Avikshita's son; I shall hurl my dreadful thunderbolt at him.
