Ashvamedhika Parva · Adhyaya 115

The Equinox Gift, the Ashvattha, the Holy Fords and Atonement

Asked by Yudhishthira about the proper times for giving, Krishna explains the equinox, when Brahma, Shankara and he are as one, and the great fruit of gifts, baths and recitation at the equinox and at eclipses. He declares the ashvattha tree to be himself and names the true holy fords: vows, service of parents and teachers, hospitality, knowledge, and above all forgiveness. Asked for an easy atonement, he gives a secret rite: honouring a Brahmin, bathing with holy earth and water, bowing to the Shishumara with its fourteen limbs, and drinking the five products of the cow with the Brahmakurcha.
