Udanka Meets King Saudasa and Madayanti Asks for a Token

In the forest Udanka meets the king Saudasa, who has become a man-eater and wants to devour him. Udanka pleads that he is on his teacher's errand and swears to return after he has done it, then asks for the queen's jewelled earrings. The king sends him to his wife Madayanti. She explains how many gods, yakshas and serpents covet the earrings and what powers they have, and asks Udanka to bring a token from the king.
