Udanka's Service to Gautama and the Quest for the Earrings

Janamejaya asks about Udanka's austerity, and Vaishampayana tells how Udanka served his teacher Gautama until old age crept up on him unnoticed. Seeing a white lock in his bundle of firewood, Udanka weeps, and Gautama lets him go, giving him his own daughter as wife once he becomes young again. For the teacher's fee, the teacher's wife Ahalya asks for the jewelled earrings of Saudasa's queen. Udanka sets out, and Gautama fears that the king will devour him.
