Samvarta Agrees to Officiate for Marutta
Samvarta asks how Marutta found him, and Marutta says Narada pointed him out and then entered the fire. Samvarta first rebuffs the king roughly, saying his elder brother Brihaspati holds the family's patrons and must give leave. Marutta explains that Brihaspati has already refused him because of Indra, and he begs Samvarta to take him on. Samvarta warns that Brihaspati and Indra will turn on them both, asks for a binding pledge, and when Marutta gives it, promises to reveal an imperishable treasure that will raise the king to equality with Indra.

Note on the text: Wikisource's two lines are a recension variant of the critical edition's verse 14.7.14, which the automatic alignment did not match (CE: amaraṃ yājyam āsādya mām ṛṣe mā sma mānuṣam / yājayethā maruttaṃ tvaṃ martyadharmāṇam āturam); the first line differs in wording and the second line is entirely different.

If I officiate for you, Brihaspati and Purandara will both be furious and turn against you. This is the one point I press on you.
Note on the text: Corrected पुंरदरौ → पुरन्दरौ (misprint in Wikisource; anusvara misplaced; the critical edition reads puraṃdarau).
