Ulupi Explains the Vasus' Curse; Arjuna Departs

Arjuna asks why the women have come to the battlefield. Ulupi explains: because Arjuna killed Bhishma by relying on Shikhandin, the Vasus and Ganga had resolved to curse him; at her father's plea they relented, decreeing that his own son would strike him down in battle and so free him of the curse. Arjuna approves, invites Babhruvahana to the horse sacrifice at Hastinapura with both his mothers, declines to enter Manalura while bound by his vow, and departs.

kaccitkuśalakāmāsi rājño'sya bhujagātmaje | mama vā capalāpāṅgi kaccittvaṃ śubhamicchasi

Do you wish this king well, daughter of the serpents? Or, lady of the restless glance, do you wish good to me?

Then the daughter of the lord of serpents said to him, laughing: "You have not wronged me, nor has Babhruvahana; nor has this his mother, who stands here as though she were my servant.

Note on the text: Three-line verse (14-82-5a,b,c) = critical edition 14.82.5a–e. Corrected यो प्रेष्यवत्थिता → या प्रेष्यवत्स्थिता (misprint in Wikisource; the relative must be feminine, agreeing with "janitrī", and the स of "sthitā" had dropped; the critical edition reads "yā preṣyavat sthitā"). Line 2 reads "na hi me babhruvāhanaḥ" where the critical edition has "na nṛpo babhruvāhanaḥ" (a variant, kept).

If you had given up your life without making peace for that, you would surely have fallen into hell because of that sinful deed. But this is the atonement that has been ordained, which you have received from your son,

Note on the text: Wikisource's three-line verse (14-82-10a,b,c) = critical edition 14.82.10a–d plus the first line of 14.82.11 ("eṣā tu vihitā śāntiḥ putrād yāṃ prāptavān asi"). Cited at the CE verse holding its first line.

Note on the text: Wikisource's three-line verse (14-82-12a,b,c) = the second line of critical edition 14.82.12 plus both lines of 14.82.13 ("āplutya devā vasavaḥ …"; "idam ūcur vaco ghoraṃ …"). My father went to the Vasus and pleaded with them on your behalf, propitiating them again and again; and they said this to him:

Verse 17 (14.82.17)

पुत्रस्तस्य महाभाग मणलूरेश्वरो युवा । स एनं रणमध्यस्थः शरैः पातयिता भुवि ॥

putrastasya mahābhāga maṇalūreśvaro yuvā | sa enaṃ raṇamadhyasthaḥ śaraiḥ pātayitā bhuvi

"His son, O fortunate one, the young lord of Manalura, will fell him to the ground with arrows as he stands in the midst of battle.

Verse 18 (14.82.18)

evaṃ kṛte sa nāgendra muktaśāpo bhaviṣyati | gaccheti vasubhiścokto mama cedaṃ śaśaṃsa saḥ

When that is done, O lord of serpents, he will be freed from the curse. Go." Thus told by the Vasus, he reported this to me.

Verse 19 (14.82.19)

तच्छ्रुत्वा त्वं मया तस्माच्छापादसि विमोक्षितः । न हि त्वां देवराजोऽपि समरेषु पराजयेत् ॥

tacchrutvā tvaṃ mayā tasmācchāpādasi vimokṣitaḥ | na hi tvāṃ devarājo'pi samareṣu parājayet
