Yudhishthira Asks Bhishma How He May Be Slain

At nightfall on the ninth day, with his army broken by Bhishma, Yudhishthira despairs and speaks of retiring to the forest. Krishna comforts him and offers to kill Bhishma himself, though Arjuna has vowed to do it; Yudhishthira will not make Krishna break his pledge not to fight, and proposes instead that they ask Bhishma how he may be overcome. The Pandavas and Krishna go unarmed to Bhishma, who tells them he will not fight a woman or one who was once a woman, so Arjuna should attack him with Shikhandi in front. Arjuna grieves at the thought of killing the grandsire who raised him, but Krishna reminds him of a kshatriya's duty, and the Pandavas settle on the plan.

Verse 1 (6.107.1)

yudhyatāmeva teṣāṃ tu bhāskare'stamupāgate | sandhyā samabhavaddhorā nāpaśyāma tato raṇam

While they were still fighting, the sun went down to its setting. A dreadful dusk came on, and after that we could no longer see the battle.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: checked against the raw Wikisource page (a table, one row per verse, 6-107-1 to 6-107-108, with headings सञ्जय उवाच at 1, 25, 52, 56 and between the lines of 69, श्रीभगवानुवाच at 26, युधिष्ठिर उवाच at 41 and 73, भीष्म उवाच at 75, श्रीवासुदेव उवाच at 96 and अर्जुन उवाच at 103, ending with the colophon naming this the 107th adhyaya). Page and input agree on all 108 rows; verse 69 is split at its heading, giving 109 verses. Together they correspond to the critical edition 6.103.1–101 (Wikisource divides several of its three-line verses into couplets, so its numbering runs ahead). The page carries the critical edition's star passages *0423, *0427, *0429, *0431, *0432 and *0433, marked with wiki quote marks; *0424, *0425, *0426, *0428, *0430 and *0434 are not on the page. The unmatched 6.102.78 belongs to the end of the previous adhyaya and has no counterpart here.

Verse 2 (6.107.2)

tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā sandhyāṃ saṃdṛśya bhārata | vadhyamānaṃ ca bhīṣmeṇa tyaktāstraṃ bhayavihvalam

Then King Yudhishthira, O Bharata, saw that dusk had fallen, that his army, being slain by Bhishma, had thrown down its weapons and was overcome with fear,

Note on the text: The automatic alignment found no match because line 2 differs: वध्यमानं च भीष्मेण त्यक्तास्त्रं भयविह्वलम् where the critical edition 6.103.2cd has vadhyamānaṃ balaṃ cāpi bhīṣmeṇāmitraghātinā; kept as a recension variant (line 1 is identical).

Verse 3 (6.107.3)

svasainyaṃ ca parāvṛttaṃ palāyanaparāyaṇam | bhīṣmaṃ ca yudhi saṃrabdhaṃ pīḍayantaṃ mahāratham

that his own troops had turned back and were bent only on flight, and that Bhishma, the great chariot-warrior, was raging in the battle and harrying them;

Note on the text: स्वसैन्यं च (CE muktaśastraṃ) and पीडयन्तं महारथम् (CE anuyāntaṃ mahārathān) kept as variants.

Verse 4 (6.107.4)

somakāṃśca jitāndṛṣṭvā nirutsāhānmahārathān | niśāmukhaṃ ca saṃprekṣya ghorarūpaṃ bhayānakam | cintayitvā tato rājñāmapahāramakārayat

and seeing the Somakas beaten and their great chariot-warriors disheartened, and looking at the face of night coming on, dreadful and fearsome, he took thought and had the kings withdraw from the fight.

Note on the text: A three-line verse as the page prints it (4a–c). Lines 1 and 3 are the critical edition's 6.103.4ab and cd (line 3 with the variant चिन्तयित्वा ततो राज्ञामपहारमकारयत् for cintayitvā ciraṃ dhyātvā avahāram arocayat); line 2 is its star passage 6.103.4b*0423, not in the constituted text. Removed the wiki quote marks (` … ') around line 2 and the stray danda printed inside them.

Verse 5 (6.107.5)

tato'pahāraṃ sainyānāṃ cakre rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ | tathaiva tava sainyānāmapahāro hyabhūttadā

So King Yudhishthira withdrew his forces, and in the same way your forces too were withdrawn at that time.

Note on the text: Corrected अपहारे → अपहारो (misprint in Wikisource; the locative leaves the verb ह्यभूत् without a subject, the critical edition reads avahāro hy abhūt). अपहार for the critical edition's avahāra (here and below) kept as Wikisource's spelling.

Verse 6 (6.107.6)

tato'pahāraṃ sainyānāṃ kṛtvā tatra mahārathāḥ | nyaviśanta kuruśreṣṭha saṃgrāme kṣatavikṣatāḥ

Having withdrawn their forces, the great chariot-warriors, wounded and torn in the battle, went to rest in their quarters, O best of the Kurus.

Verse 7 (6.107.7)

bhīṣmasya samare karma cintayānāstu pāṇḍavāḥ | nālabhanta tadā śāntiṃ bhīṣmabāṇaprapīḍitāḥ

The Pandavas, brooding on what Bhishma had done in battle and tormented by Bhishma's arrows, found no peace that night.

Note on the text: भीष्मबाणप्रपीडिताः (CE bhṛśaṃ bhīṣmeṇa pīḍitāḥ) kept as a variant.

Verse 8 (6.107.8)

bhīṣmo'pi samare jitvā pāṇḍavānsaha sṛñjayān | pūjyamānastava sutairvandyamānaśca bhārata

Bhishma too, having beaten the Pandavas and the Srinjayas in battle, honored and saluted by your sons, O Bharata,

Note on the text: सह सृञ्जयान् (CE saha sṛñjayaiḥ) kept as a variant.

Verse 9 (6.107.9)

nyaviśatkurubhiḥ sārdhaṃ hṛṣṭarūpaiḥ samantataḥ | tato rātriḥ samabhavatsarvabhūtapramohinī

went to his quarters with the Kurus, who were rejoicing all around him. Then came night, which bewilders all creatures.

Verse 10 (6.107.10)

tasminrātrimukhe ghore pāṇḍavā vṛṣṇibhiḥ saha | sṛñjayāśca durādharṣā mantrāya samupāviśan

At the onset of that dreadful night the Pandavas, with the Vrishnis and the unassailable Srinjayas, sat down to take counsel.

Verse 11 (6.107.11)

ātmaniḥśreyasaṃ sarve prāptakālaṃ mahābalāḥ | mantrayāmāsuravyagrā mantraniścayakovidāḥ

All those mighty men, skilled at reaching decisions in counsel, calmly deliberated on what was best for themselves and what the hour required.

Verse 12 (6.107.12)

tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā mantrayitvā ciraṃ nṛpa | vāsudevaṃ samudvīkṣya vacanaṃ cedamādade

Then King Yudhishthira, after long deliberation, O king, looked toward Vasudeva and spoke these words:

Note on the text: वचनं चेदमाददे (CE vākyam etad uvāca ha) kept as a variant.

Verse 13 (6.107.13)

kṛṣṇa paśya mahātmānaṃ bhīṣmaṃ bhīmaparākramam | gajaṃ nalavanānīva vimṛdnantaṃ balaṃ mama

Krishna, look at the great-souled Bhishma of terrible prowess, crushing my army as an elephant crushes a bed of reeds.

Note on the text: Speaker: Yudhishthira's speech (verses 13–24) has no printed heading on the page (the सञ्जय heading of verse 1 carries over until the सञ्जय heading at verse 25); it is given to Yudhishthira, whose words verse 12 introduces. Corrected माहात्मानं → महात्मानं (misprint in Wikisource; a stray long ā, critical edition mahātmānaṃ) and विमृद्गन्तं → विमृद्नन्तं (misprint in Wikisource; ग for न in the present participle of mṛd, critical edition vimṛdnantaṃ). The order कृष्ण पश्य (CE paśya kṛṣṇa) kept as a variant.

Verse 14 (6.107.14)

na caivainaṃ mahātmānamutsahāmo nirīkṣitum | lelihyamānaṃ sainyeṣu pravṛddhamiva pāvakam

We cannot even bear to look at that great-souled man as he licks at our troops like a fire blazing high.

Verse 15 (6.107.15)

yathā ghoro mahānāgastakṣako vai viṣolbaṇaḥ | tathā bhīṣmo raṇe kruddhastīkṣṇaśastraḥ pratāpavān

As the dreadful great serpent Takshaka is, swollen with venom, so is Bhishma in battle when he is angry, sharp-weaponed and blazing with power.

Note on the text: क्रुद्धस् (CE kṛṣṇa) kept as a variant.

Verse 16 (6.107.16)

gṛhītacāpaḥ samare pramuñcanniśitāñcharān | śakyo jetuṃ yamaḥ kruddho vajrapāṇiśca devarāṭ

When he has taken up his bow in battle and is loosing his whetted arrows, Yama in his anger could sooner be conquered, and the king of the gods with the thunderbolt in his hand,

Note on the text: प्रमुञ्चन्निशिताञ्छरान् (CE vimuñcaṃś ca śitāñ śarān) kept as a variant.

Verse 17 (6.107.17)

varuṇaḥ pāśabhṛccāpi sagado vā dhaneśvaraḥ | na tu bhīṣmaḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ śakyo jetuṃ mahāhave

so'hamevaṃ gate kṛṣṇa nimagnaḥ śokasāgare | ātmano buddhidaurbalyādbhīṣmamāsādya saṃyuge

Things having come to this, Krishna, I am sunk in an ocean of grief, because through the weakness of my own judgement I came up against Bhishma in battle.

Verse 19 (6.107.19)

kṣayaṃ nīto'smi vārṣṇeya rājyahetoḥ parākramī | bhrātaraścaiva me śūrāḥ sāyakairbhṛśapīḍitāḥ

I have been brought to ruin, descendant of Vrishni, by my valor for the sake of a kingdom; and my brave brothers have been sorely wounded by arrows.

Note on the text: Corrected शुराः → शूराः (misprint in Wikisource; short u for ū, critical edition śūrāḥ).

Verse 22 (6.107.22)

Note on the text: Corresponds to 6.103.34ab–cd. From here to verse 39 Wikisource divides the critical edition's three-line verses 6.103.34 and 38 into couplets, so the lines run one couplet out of step (the automatic alignment therefore found no match); nothing is lost.

Note on the text: Corresponds to 6.103.38cd + 6.103.38ef. Corrected निहन्त्याद् → निहन्याद् (misprint in Wikisource; a stray त् in the optative of han, critical edition nihanyād).

How shall I fight in battle against the grandsire, Madhava, my teacher, the elder of the Kurus, wise and of ripened understanding?

Note on the text: Speaker: Arjuna's speech (Wikisource verses 90–95) has no printed heading on the page (the सञ्जय heading of verse 88 carries over until the श्रीवासुदेव heading at verse 96); it is given to Arjuna, whose words Wikisource verse 89 introduces. कुरुवृद्धेन (CE kulavṛddhena) and योद्धास्मि (CE yotsyāmi) kept as variants.

yasyāhamadhiruhyāṅkaṃ bālaḥ kila gadāgraja | tātetyavocaṃ pitaraṃ pituḥ pāṇḍormahātmanaḥ

Climbing into his lap as a little boy, elder brother of Gada, I used to call him "father", though he was the father of my father, the great-souled Pandu.

Note on the text: Corrected वालः → बालः (misprint in Wikisource; व for ब, critical edition bālaḥ).
