Bhishma Parva · Adhyaya 119

The Fall of Bhishma

On the tenth day the Pandavas, with Shikhandin in front, close round Bhishma, and Arjuna cuts bow after bow from his hands. Bhishma resolves not to fight back, since the Pandavas are not to be slain and Shikhandin was born a woman, and the sages and Vasus in the sky approve; he tells Duhshasana that the arrows tearing him are Arjuna's, not Shikhandin's. Pierced everywhere, he falls from his chariot before sunset onto a bed of arrows, and since the sun is in its southern course he resolves, before the swan-sages sent by Ganga, to hold on to life until the northern course. The Pandavas rejoice, the Kauravas are stunned, and Bhishma lies in yoga awaiting his time.

Verse 1 (6.119.1)

एवं ते पाण्डवाः सर्वे पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम् । विव्यधुः समरे भीष्मं परिवार्य समन्ततः ॥

evaṃ te pāṇḍavāḥ sarve puraskṛtya śikhaṇḍinam | vivyadhuḥ samare bhīṣmaṃ parivārya samantataḥ

Thus all the Pandavas, placing Shikhandin in front, surrounded Bhishma on every side and pierced him in the battle.

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: checked against the raw Wikisource page (a table, one row per verse, 6-119-1 to 6-119-125, under the heading भीष्मनिपातः, closing with the colophon of the 119th adhyaya, on the tenth day of battle). Page and input agree on all 125 verses. Together they are the critical edition's 6.114.1–112 (the fall of Bhishma), with the star passages 6.114.31d*0475, 45b*0476, 52f*0478 (line 2 only), 74d*0479, 76b*0480 and 105b*0481, which the page partly marks off with backticks; the star passages *0474, *0474A, *0477 and line 1 of *0478 are not on the page and were not added. The page prints most of the critical edition's three-line verses as couplets, so from verse 3 on the lines run across verse boundaries; each such verse carries the ce_ref of the critical-edition verse holding its first line. The page prints no speaker heading; the critical edition heads the adhyaya saṃjaya uvāca and the narrator speaks of "your father" and "we", so the narration is given to Sanjaya. Speeches without a heading that fill whole verses are given to their speakers: the Sages and Vasus (37), Bhishma (56–58, 61–67, 108–111) and the voices from the sky (98). Bhishma's unspoken reflection in verses 32–35 stays with the narrator.

Verse 2 (6.119.2)
