Bhishma Parva · Adhyaya 120

Arjuna Gives Bhishma a Pillow of Arrows

Dhritarashtra laments the fall of Bhishma, and Sanjaya describes how the grandsire fell at evening onto a bed of arrows that kept him from the ground, while the sky darkened, the sages praised him and both armies ceased fighting. Kurus and Pandavas gather to salute him; refusing soft pillows, Bhishma asks Arjuna for one fit for a hero's bed, and Arjuna props up his head with three arrows. Bhishma resolves to lie there until the sun turns north, asks for a trench around him, sends away the surgeons, and the princes set a guard and return to camp. That night Krishna congratulates Yudhishthira, who answers that victory comes only by Krishna's grace.

Verse 1 (6.120.1)

kathamāsaṃstadā yodhā hīnā bhīṣmeṇa sañjaya | balinā devakalpena kaumārabrahmacāriṇā

How did the warriors fare then, Sanjaya, bereft of Bhishma, the mighty and godlike, who had been celibate from his boyhood?

Note on the text: Adhyaya note: checked against the raw Wikisource page (a table, one row per verse, 6-120-1 to 6-120-71c, with the heading धृतराष्ट्र उवाच before verse 1 and सञ्जय उवाच at rows 7x, 39x, 55x, 68x and 71x). This adhyaya is the critical edition's 6.115 (Bhishma on the bed of arrows; the pillow of arrows; Krishna and Yudhishthira that night). Wikisource's verses 7, 68 and 71 are split at the page's mid-verse headings (verses 7–8, 69–70 and 73–74 here). Speeches without a printed heading that fill whole verses are given to their speakers: Bhishma (34, 39, 43, 49–50, 52–55, 58–59), Arjuna (41), Krishna as वासुदेव (68–69) and Yudhishthira (71–73). Verse 1: कौमारब्रह्मचारिणा for gurvarthe brahmacāriṇā kept as a variant.

Verse 2 (6.120.2)

tadaiva nihatānmanye kurūnanyāṃśca pāṇḍavaiḥ | na prāharadyadā bhīṣmo ghṛṇitvāddrupadātmajam

I think the Kurus and the others were already slain by the Pandavas at the moment when Bhishma, out of compassion, would not strike the son of Drupada.

Note on the text: पाण्डवैः for pārthivān and द्रुपदात्मजम् (masculine, of Shikhandin) for drupadātmaje kept as variants.

Verse 3 (6.120.3)

tato duḥkhataraṃ manye kimanyatprabhaviṣyati | adyaiva nihataṃ śrutvā pitaraṃ mama durmateḥ

What sorrow greater than this could there be, now that I hear that the father of wicked me has been slain today?

Verse 4 (6.120.4)

aśmasāramayaṃ nūnaṃ hṛdayaṃ mama sañjaya | śrutvā vinihataṃ bhīṣmaṃ śatadhā yanna dīryate

Surely my heart is made of iron, Sanjaya, since it does not burst into a hundred pieces on hearing that Bhishma has been slain.

Verse 5 (6.120.5)

yadanyannihatenājau bhīṣmeṇa jayamicchatā | ceṣṭitaṃ kurusiṃhena tanme kathaya suvrata

Whatever else that lion of the Kurus did after he was struck down in battle, still longing for victory, tell me that, you who keep your vows.

Note on the text: Wikisource prints the critical edition's 6.115.6 here, before 6.115.5 (verse 6). कुरुसिंहेन and सुव्रत for narasiṃhena and saṃjaya kept as variants.

Verse 6 (6.120.6)

punaḥpunarna mṛṣyāmi hataṃ devavrataṃ raṇe | na hato jāmadagnyena divyairastraiśca yaḥ purā

Again and again I cannot bear it, that Devavrata has been slain in battle, he whom even Jamadagni's son could not slay long ago with all his celestial weapons.

Verse 7 (6.120.7)

sa hato draupadeyena pāñcālyena śikhaṇḍinā

And now he has been slain by Drupada's son, Shikhandin of Panchala!

Note on the text: First part of Wikisource's verse 7, split off because the page prints the heading सञ्जय उवाच (row 6-120-7x) after this line; the input had joined both parts and given them to Dhritarashtra. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the critical edition records it in its apparatus as the star passage 6.115.5d*0482 (द्रौपदेयेन here means Drupada's son).

Toward evening he fell to the earth, filling the sons of Dhritarashtra with despair

Note on the text: Second part of Wikisource's verse 7, after the heading सञ्जय उवाच; this is the critical edition's 6.115.7ab, which also opens Sanjaya's reply there.

The sky was wrapped in darkness and the sun lost its radiance; the earth cried out when Bhishma, son of Shantanu, was slain.

Note on the text: Line 1 (खं तमःसंवृतमभूदासीद्भानुर्गतप्रभः) differs in wording from the critical edition's 6.115.11ab (khaṃ tamovṛtam āsīc ca nāsīd bhānumataḥ prabhā); kept as a recension variant.
